The ultimate goal and role of national symbols is to establish a national identity and make the symbolic system that can clearly be distinguished from other countries. This study is to analyses elements of the symbol system in relation to the identity of New Zealand, and to investigate how historical and geographic characteristics are reflected in the symbol system. As a result of the analysis, the National flag of New Zealand is clearly expressed the symbolic image of the Commonwealth of Nations and the Southern Cross as a geographical landmark. The national anthem articulated the identity of the Commonwealth of Nations and the wish for the geographical location was considered in the lyrics. The national animal is a Kiwi bird, which exists only in the region of New Zealand, and is expressed as an animal that symbolizes the gentle personality of the people. In addition the name of Kiwi has been used as a symbol object that represents as the fruit of Kiwi as well as the New Zealand people. The silver fern, which is a national floral, has been utilized significantly as its image shape was applied to representative symbolic objects certified by the nation. These results clearly demonstrate the national identity was taken into account the historical and geographic characteristics. This study is to explore the national identity symbol system, and as the result it can be used significantly in promoting the national brand image in the near future.

국가 상징의 궁극적 목적과 역할은 국가 정체성을 확립하고 다른 국가와 구별할 수 있는 상징체계를 분 명하게 만드는 것이다. 본고는 뉴질랜드의 정체성과 관련한 5가지의 상징 체계를 대상으로 그 나라의 역사적·지리적 특성이 어떻게 상징체계에 반영되어 있는지를 조사·분석한 국가 정체성 상징체계 연구이다. 분석의 결과, 뉴질랜드 국기(國旗)는 영국 연방국 가임을 상징하는 이미지와 지리적 표시인 남십자성이 분명하게 표현되어 있었다. 국장(國章)은 문장의 구 성요소를 중심으로 뉴질랜드의 건국이념을 명확하게 표현하고 있었으며, 국가(國歌)는 영국 연방국가로서 뉴질랜드의 임무와 지리적 위치에 대한 염원이 가사 에 담겨 있는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 국수(國獸)는 지역에서만 존재하는 키위(Kiwi)새로 국민의 온화한 성격을 상징하는 동물로 표현하였다. 또한, 키위란 명 칭은 키위 새 이외에도 뉴질랜드 국민을 일컫는 상징 성 및 과일 이름으로 사용되고 있었다. 마지막으로 국가 상징 식물인 은고사리 식물은 이미지 형상이 국 가가 인증하는 대표적인 상징물에 적용하여 매우 활 발히 활용되고 있었다. 본 연구의 총합적인 결론은 뉴질랜드 정체성 상징 체계는 뉴질랜드의 역사적·지리적 특성이 결합되어 그 기능을 수행하고 있다는 사실의 발견이다. 본 연 구의 내용이 향후 국가 정체성 상징체계 연구 혹은 국가 브랜드 이미지 활성화 정책에 유의미한 자료로 활용되기를 기대한다.
