The Baby's Opera(1877), The Baby's Bouquet(1878) and The Baby's Own Aesop(1886) were produced by Walter Crane as the series of works with the same format, showing a new square format, systematic editorial design as well as high-quality illustration indicating the personality of Crane. In particular, The Baby's Opera, the first work of the series, has a significant meaning in that it played a role in editorial deign of remaining series of books and subsequent modern books. The purpose of this thesis lies in viewing the background and intention of this book, editorial deign and expression style of illustrations from various perspectives and highlighting its meaning in the history of modern design. The unique format of the square is a completely new one that has not made before, which was derived from Crane's own ceramic tile design. Particularly, this is supposed to have inspired the format of Ver Sacrum, the official magazine of the Wiener Secession in the end of 19th century. The main concept of this book pursued by Crane is the 'joyful and happy world of childish innocence'. In an effort to embody the concept, the personification of animals, plants and objects, and the scene setting and expression with humor are imitated and developed through illustrators, such as Randolph Caldecott. In addition, the world of children in this book is often expressed as Arcadia of peaceful and romantic images, in which the real world and imaginary worlds coexist, showing mixed cultures. In particular, it is recognized to exert great influences on the contemporary illustrator Kate Greenaway in terms of the style and image expressing the world of children and their appearances.

월터 크레인의 『어린이 오페라』(1877), 『어린이 부케』(1878)『어린이 이솝이야기』(1886)는 같은 규격과 포맷을 지닌 일종의 연작으로서 제작되었는데, 정사각형의 새로운 포맷과 체계적인 편집디자인, 크 레인의 개성이 잘 발휘된 수준 높은 일러스트레이션 을 보여준다. 특히 맨 처음 발표된 『어린이 오페 라』는 이어지는 연작은 물론 이후의 책 편집디자인 에 하나의 모델이 되어주었다는 점에서 주목된다. 이 책의 제작 배경 및 의도, 편집디자인과 일러스트레이 션의 표현 양식 등을 여러 관점에서 조명하고, 그것 이 현대 디자인사에서 갖는 의미를 부각하는 데 본고 의 목표가 있다. 『어린이 오페라』의 독특한 정사각형 포맷은 전혀 새로운 형식으로서, 크레인 자신의 세라믹 타일 디자 인의 형태에서 연유되었다. 이것은 특히 19세기말 비 엔나 분리파의 기관지 『성스러운 봄』의 포맷에 영 감을 주었을 것으로 추정된다. 크레인이 의도한 이 책의 주요 콘셉트는 ‘즐겁고 행복한 동심의 세계’이다. 그것을 형상화하기 위해 그가 구사하는 동식물과 사물의 의인화, 유머가 있는 장면설정과 표현은 랜돌프 칼데콧 같은 동시대의 일 러스트레이터를 통해 모방되고 발전된다. 아울러 아 이들의 세계는 종종 평화롭고도 낭만적인 이미지의 아르카디아로 표현되는데, 거기에는 현실과 상상의 세계가 공존하며 혼합문화적 요소도 나타난다. 특히 어린이의 세계와 그들의 외모를 표현하는 스타일에서 동시대의 일러스트레이터 케이트 그린어웨이에게 많 은 영향을 준 것으로 보인다.
