This study examined the expressive characteristics of the Barbie doll collection and the flow of the fashion style of the times through comparative analysis of the androgynous style that appeared in the Barbie doll collection, which is a cultural icon that reflects various changes of the times, with the womenswear collection. Base on this, the standard of androgynous style expressed in womenswear was defined as masculine, gender-neutral, and androgynous elements, and as an empirical study, the research compared and analyzed androgynous style appeared on Barbie doll collections and womenswear collections after 2000s (from 2000 to March 2019). These photographs were divided into ten year periods, and representative photographs with design elements (silhouettes, items, colors, patterns, and details) that occupied a high proportion of the style photographs in the 2000s and 2010s were selected and analyzed. The conclusions drawn from this study are as follows. First, the androgynous style is an expression of a perfect, ideal state that integrates masculinity and femininity and has remained a classical fashion trend since its first emergence in the fashion industry. Second, for the identification of the androgynous style in the Barbie doll collection and womenswear collection, this study followed the following criteria: the masculine, gender-neutral, and androgynous elements in womenswear and the silhouettes that do not restrain the freedom of the female body. Third, Barbie dolls, as the objects symbolizing the zeitgeist, have evolved reflecting the standards of the beauty of the times. Through this study, it was established that the androgynous style has been reflected and expressed in various forms in Barbie dolls’ fashion. The research has significance as a basic study in that it examined the meaning of Barbie dolls as a cultural icon reflecting the social, political, economic, cultural backgrounds, and fashion trends of the times.

연구는 시대의 다양한 변화를 반영하는 문화 아이콘인 바비인형 컬렉션에 나타난 앤드로지너스 스타일 을 여성복 컬렉션과 비교 분석을 통해, 바비인형 컬렉션의 표현적 특성과 시대적 패션 양식의 흐름을 살펴보 았다. 연구 방법은 문헌연구 및 선행연구를 통해 바비인형의 출현 배경과 바비인형의 특성, 앤드로지너스의 개념 및 출현 배경, 현대 패션에 나타난 앤드로지너스 스타일의 특징을 정리하였다. 이를 바탕으로 여성복에 표현 된 앤드로지너스 스타일의 기준을 남성적, 중성적, 양성적 요소로 정의하였고, 실증연구로 2000년대 이후 (2000년부터 2019년 3월까지) 바비인형과 여성복 컬렉션에 나타난 앤드로지너스 스타일을 비교 분석하였다. 이들 사진을 10년 단위로 기간을 나누어 2000년대와 2010년대에 나타난 스타일의 사진 중 높은 비중을 차지 하는 디자인 요소(실루엣, 아이템, 색상, 문양, 디테일)를 지닌 대표적인 사진을 선별하여 분석하였다. 본 연구 의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 앤드로지너스 스타일은 남성성과 여성성을 결합하여 이상적인 완전한 존재에 대한 표현으로 등장 이후 지금까지 고전적인 패션 트렌드로 자리 잡고 있음을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 바비인형 컬렉션과 여성복 컬렉션에 나타난 앤드로지너스 스타일은 여성복에 나타난 남성적, 중성적, 양성적 요소를 가지며 여성의 신체를 구속하지 않는 실루엣을 중점 요소로 기준화하였다. 셋째, 바비인형은 시대성을 가지 고 시대의 미의 기준을 반영하며 발전하였다. 바비인형은 여성스러움이 여성의 아름다움의 기준이 되었던 전통적인 성 개념의 기준에서 벗어나, 시대의 흐름에 따라 남성적, 중성적, 양성적 요소를 가진 앤드로지너스 스타일을 통해 시대의 미를 표현하고 있다. 본 연구를 통해 바비인형 패션에서도 앤드로지너스 스타일이 나 타나 다양한 형태로 표현되고 있음을 알 수 있었으며, 이는 시대의 사회·정치·경제·문화적 배경과 패션 트렌 드를 반영하는 문화 아이콘으로서의 바비인형이 패션에서 가지는 의미에 대한 기초연구로서 의미가 있다.
