This study analyzed the process and experience of the elderly with cognitive disabilities living in nursing homes to explore how they understand and accept the life they have lived through. Life history research methods proposed by Mandelbaum(1973) were applied, three different aspects of life courses and experiences were analyzed: ‘Life Domain’, ‘Turning Points’, and ‘Adaptation’. Among a total of 69 elderly living in a nursing home in C city, 5 persons with decent communication capability were purposively sampled, and in-depth interviews were conducted. The following themes were revealed: In ‘Life Domain’, ‘Jilgyungyi(Plantago asiatica)-like life: tenacious life’, ‘ambivalence about children’ and ‘resentment toward my spouse’ were found. In ‘Life Transition’, ‘decision for my family’ and ‘difficulty adapting to a new environment’ were observed. Lastly, in ‘Self-acceptance and Adaptation’, ‘Overcoming the difficulties of living in the nursing home by faith’, ‘satisfaction after giving up almost everything’ and ‘peace in mind’ were found. The majority of study participants were found to adopt different living environments while experiencing passive self-acceptance after giving up almost everything. In conclusion, practice implications for improvements of self-acceptance were proposed.

이 연구는 요양원에 입소한 인지장애노인을 대상으로 그들의 생애과정과 경험을 분석하여 자신들이 겪어온 일생에 대한 삶을 어떻게 이해하며 수용하고 있는지를 심층적으로 탐색해 보는 것을 목적으로 한다. Mandelbaum(1973)이 제시한 생애사 연구방법을 적용하여 ‘삶의 영역’, ‘전환점’, ‘적응’의 세 가지 차원으로 분석 하였다. 연구참여자는 의도적 표집방법(purposive sampling)에 의해 ○○시에 위치한 노인요양원을 대상으로 전체 69명의 입소 노인 중 의사소통이 원활한 노인 5명을 선정하여 심층면접방식으로 자료수집을 하였다. 연구결과 삶의 영역은 ‘질경이와 같은 삶’, ‘자녀에 대한 양가감정’, ‘배우자에 대한 원망’, 삶의 전환분석은 ‘가족을 위한 결단’, ‘새로운 환경 적응에의 어려움’, 마지막으로 자기수용과 적응에 관한 분석은 ‘시설생활의 어려움을 신앙 으로 극복’, ‘체념어린 포기에 의한 수용’, ‘요령으로 터득한 마음의 안정’으로 나타났다. 따라서 요양원에 입소 한 대부분의 연구참여자들은 ‘체념어린 포기에 의한 수용’으로 수동적 자기수용을 경험하면서 새로운 삶에 적응 하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과를 토대로 자기수용을 향상시킬 수 있는 실천적 방안을 제언하였다.
