Recently as the problem of the rapid spread of dementia has emerged, a nationwide interest has been raised in finding causes, preventions, and treatments to dementia. Several recent studies in a field of social welfare have examined the cognitive function through the approaches from social and structural perspective such as social exclusion. The purpose of this study is to identify the mediating effects of the depression between social exclusion and cognitive function of the elderly. In order to achieve this goal, 4,584 people were analyzed by using a method of structural equation modeling from the date of in the sixth year of the Korea Aging Panel in 2016. The findings are as follows. Firstly social exclusion of the elderly has been verified as a factor that lowers cognitive function. Secondly the mediating effect between social exclusion and cognitive function of the elderly has been verified. Thirdly the results of the verification of the mediated effects of depression showed that it was partially mediated. In other words, the higher the social exclusion would be, the lower the cognitive function is. The mediating effect of depression on the decline of the cognitive function has been verified. Based on this findings this studies suggest the social welfare practices focus on reducing depression and management of elderly cases for their emotional and mental health in order to prevent deterioration of cognitive function in old age.

최근 급격한 치매 확산의 문제가 대두되고 있어 치매의 원인과 예방 및 치료에 관심이 높아지고 있다. 특히 본 연구에서는 사회구조적 관점을 중심으로 노인의 사회적 배제와 인지기능 간의 관계에서 우울의 매개효과를 규명하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위하여 2016년 한국고령화패널 6차년도의 원자료를 사용 하여 4,584명의 연구대상을 분석하였다. 분석방법으로 기술통계분석 및 구조방정식을 활용한 경로분석을 실시하 였다. 그 결과 첫째, 노인의 사회적 배제는 인지기능을 저하시키는 요인으로 검증되었다. 둘째, 노인의 사회적 배 제와 인지기능 간의 매개효과가 검증되었다. 셋째, 우울의 매개효과 검증 결과 부분 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 즉 사회적 배제가 높을수록 인지기능이 낮게 나타나는 직접 효과와 동시에 인지기능 저하에 대한 우울의 매개 효과를 알 수 있었다. 이를 통해 노후의 인지기능 저하를 예방하기 위해서는 우울을 감소시키는 사회복지적 실 천과 정서⋅정신건강을 위한 노후 맞춤형 사례관리 등을 제언할 수 있다.
