Propriety and Music refer to the totality of human culture in Pre-Qin Confucianism. according to Liji Leji , the Propriety was established by the principle of the earth, so it has certain formalities and rules as an expression through the external actions. The Music was made by the principle of heaven, so it is mild and calm and harmonizes all things between heaven and earth. Therefore, if the Propriety does not conform to the principle of the earth, the order becomes confused, and if the Music does not follow the principle of the heaven, it will not be harmonious. underlies human culture while Propriety, as a normative element of human external action, and Music, as an expressive element of human intrinsic nature and emotion, are complementing each other and harmonized. therefore, it should not be biased towards one side because each plays a complementary role. in this paper, we are going to apply these characteristics of etiquette to calligraphy to examine how the relationship is formed. In calligraphy, Equilibrium-Harmony beauty is considered as the highest aesthetic ideal. it emphasizes the harmony of Propriety and Music, at the same time, it says calligraphy should reach the stage of Equilibrium-Harmony that is not biased. they can attain the perfection of Goodness and Beauty only if the Goodness as an internal beauty and the Beauty as an external beauty are harmonized with each other. This is because calligraphy is the art which has to not only pursue the harmony and unity of two opposite forms by filling up one's deficiency with the other like the relation between Propriety and Music but also fulfill the Profound Combination beauty of correlation between Yin and Yang. The most influential thought on calligraphy is the theory of Yin and Yang in the Book of Changes. To spread out the energy of Yang is the function of Music, and to bow down the energy of Yin following the principle of the earth is the function of Music. Propriety and Music should always be harmonized, and the harmony of Propriety and Music refers to the harmony of Yin and Yang. This thought applies not only on calligraphy but also all kinds of arts. Through these studies, we can confirm that the characteristics inherent in the art and calligraphy form an aesthetic similar correlation.

禮樂은 先秦儒家에서 인간문화의 총체를 지칭하는 의미를 갖는다. 『禮記』『樂記』에 의하면, 禮는 땅의 이치에 따라 제정되었으며 바깥으로 드러나는 행위를 통한 표 현으로 일정한 형식과 규정이 있고, 樂은 하늘의 이치에 따라 제정되었으며 마음속에 서 나옴으로써 온화하고 고요하며 천지간의 사물을 서로 화합한다. 그러므로 禮가 땅 의 이치에 맞지 않으면 질서가 혼란해지는 것이고, 樂이 하늘의 이치에 맞지 않으면 조 화롭지 못하게 되는 것이다. 禮는 인간의 외재적 행위에 대한 규범 요소로써, 樂은 인 간의 내재적 性情에 대한 감발 요소로써, 상호 보완·조화되면서 인간문화의 저변에 주 도적으로 흐르는 것이 禮樂思想이다. 이렇듯 禮와 樂은 상호 보완적 역할을 맡고 있기 에 한쪽으로만 치우쳐서는 안 된다. 이러한 禮樂의 特徵을 본 논문에서는 서예에 적용 하여 어떠한 相關關係를 형성하고 있는지에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 서예에서는 가장 높은 심미 이상으로 中和美를 말한다. 禮와 樂의 조화를 강조 하면서 어느 한쪽으로 치우침이 없이 中和를 이루어야 하는 것이다. 또한, 서예의 최고 심미 규범은 對待요소의 妙合을 통한 形質美를 體現하는 것에 있다. 내적인 아름다움 의 善과 외적인 아름다움의 美가 서로 조화와 통일을 이루어 陰陽對待의 妙合美를 갖 추어야 하는 예술이 서예이기 때문이다. 서예에 가장 많은 영향을 준 것은 『周易』의 陰陽論이다. 陽氣를 펼치는 것은 樂 의 기능이고, 陰氣를 굽혀서 땅에 따르는 것은 禮의 기능이다. 禮와 樂은 항상 調和를 이루어야 하는 것이며, 이러한 禮樂의 調和는 곧 陰陽의 調和를 말하는 것이다. 이는 모든 예술 분야에서 또한 마찬가지이며, 이와 같은 사유는 서예에도 적용이 되는 것이다. 이러한 禮樂의 美學的特徵인 禮節樂和의 中和美와 陰陽對待의 妙合美를 통해, 禮樂속에 내재 되어있는 특징과 서예의 특징들이 美學的으로 유사한 相關關係를 형성 하고 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
