The purpose of this study was to examine the unfolding aspect of writing education over the past 20 years at major universities in Korea, and to present further development plans for university writing education. To this end, the study divided the period between 2000 and 2005, 2006 to 2015, and 2016 to 2020, and examined the characteristics of the development of writing education at major universities in Korea for each of those periods. According to the findings, the following characteristics were learned: from 2000 to 2005, the necessity of writing education was introduced in domestic universities. Around 2005, this necessity spread to universities nationwide, and from 2010 to 2015, a dedicated organization for general education was established in accordance with the university’s internal and external demands to strengthen the quality management of general education. Since 2016, university writing education has emerged as a type of education for enhancing core competencies, while education goals and the contents of that education have become more diversified. In light of these findings, this study suggested two ways to improve domestic university writing education. First, it is necessary to establish a connection between the curriculum aimed at improving communication capacity and thinking ability among the students. Second, it is necessary to prepare a system to strengthen the professionalism and educational competencies of writing instructors.

이 연구는 지난 20여 년 동안의 국내 주요 대학 글쓰기 교육의 전개 양상을 살펴보고, 국내 대학 글쓰기 교육의 발전 방향을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 이 연구에서는 2000~2005년, 2006~2015년, 2016~2020년까지로 시기를 구분하고, 각 시기별 국내 주요 대학 글쓰기 교육의 전개 양상의 특징을 살펴보았다. 지난 20여 년 동안의 국내 주요 대학 글쓰기 교육의 흐름을 살펴본 결과, 다음과 같은 특징을 찾아볼 수 있다. 2000~2005년은 국내 대학에서 글쓰기 교육의 필수화가 도입된 시기라 할 수 있다. 그리고 2005년 전후로 대학 글쓰기 교육의 필수화가 전국 대학에 확산되었다. 이후 2010~2015년에는 교양교육 질 관리 강화라는 대학의 내적⋅외적 요구에 따라 교양교육 전담기구가 설치되고, 대학 글쓰기 교육에 대한 다양한 질 관리 체계가 도입되기에 이른다. 2016년 이후에는 대학 글쓰기 교육이 핵심역량 증진을 위한 교육으로 부각되면서 교육 목표 및 내용이 다변화된다. 이를 바탕으로 국내 대학 글쓰기 교육의 발전 방향을 두 가지로 제시하면 다음과 같다. 우선, 의사소통 역량 및 사고력 증진 목적의 교육과정 간 연계성을 구축해야 한다. 다음으로 글쓰기 교수자의 전문성 및 교육 역량 강화를 위한 시스템을 마련해야 할 것이다.
