The purpose of this study is to examine the architectural relationship between the original housing type of Philippine in B.C.3,000, Bahay Kubo and the new housing type during the colonial period, Bahay na Bato. Over the time interval of 4,500 years, the study assumed that architectural characteristics of the former have had a strong influence on the later. Similarities and differences between the two different housing types were explored in some detail. Review of relevant literature and architectural drawings, analysis of documentary videos as related to the topic, questionnaire survey and interviews with the related professionals and site visits were performed. This study found that there is a package of architectural DNAs interconnected between the two housing types.

본 연구의 목적은 기원전 3000년경 조성이 시작된 필리핀 전통주거양식인 Bahay Kubo와 서기 1668년 에서 1900년 사이 즉 스페인 식민지시대 동안 뿌리내린 새로운 주거양식인 Bahay na Bato 간의 건축적 역학관 계를 조사 분석하는데 있다. Bahay Kubo 시대에서 Bahay na Bato시대까지의 시간적 거리는 무려 4,500년이 넘 는다. 이 오랜 기간을 거치면서 Bahay Kubo의 적지 않은 건축적 특징들이 Bahay na Bato 건축양식에 전달되었 을 것이란 가정 하에 본 연구가 진행되었다. 두 주거양식 간 건축적 유사점과 차이점을 체계적으로 탐색하는데 본 연구의 초점을 두었다. 이를 위해관련문헌 탐색, 건축도서 검토, 다큐멘터리 비디오 분석, 관련자 설문조사, 심층면 담, 현장방문 등의 다채로운 연구방법들이 활용되었다. 당초의 예상처럼, 4500년이란 오랜 기간에도 불구하고 두 양식 간 건축적 유사점이 발견되었고 차이점 또한 적지 않았다. 이로써, 전통주거에 담긴 건축적 DNA가 시대를 초월해서 유지된다는 사실이 입증되었다.
