This article examines the morality which is pursued in bioethics. In 1970 V. R. Potter was the first to use the term “bioethics” to advocate the development of a new discipline as “science of survival”. In the words of Potter: “Bioethics is advanced as a new discipline that combines biological knowledge with a knowledge of human value systems.” In the introduction of the first edition of the Encyclopedia of Bioethics(1978), the publishing chief W. T. Reich defined bioethics as “the systematic study of human conduct in the area of the sciences of life and health, as this conduct is examined in the light of moral values and principles”. Responsibility for life, respect for autonomy, and protection for the physical life are regarded as important morality in bioethics.

“도덕성(morality)이란 무엇인가”의 물음에 관한 답을 찾기 위해 본고에서는 생명윤리학에서는 도덕성을 어떻게 이해하고 접근하고 있는가에 관해 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해 생명윤리학의 등장 과정에서 관심을 가진 도덕성, 생명윤리학의 정의(定義)들에 담긴 도덕성, 생명윤리학의 구체적인 원칙들과 생명 관련 법률적 결정(특히 헌법재판소의 형법의 낙태죄 헌법 불합치 헌법재판소 결정, 2019. 4. 11.) 등에 담긴 도덕성에 관해 논의하였다. 이러한 논의를 통해 생존을 위한 학제적 접근으로 출발한 생명윤리학은 생명에 대한 책임, 자율성 존중, 생명 수호, 자유와 책임 등의 도덕성을 중시하고 있음을 밝혔다.
