The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between regional specialization and new venture formation in manufacturing industry. Though previous studies on the location of venture firms have vigorously attempted to explore regional factors, they have disregarded the different features of firm growth stages and industrial attributes. To tackle these limitations of the extant studies, we used a panel data set consisting of the number of new venture creation in manufacturing industry and regional industrial structures measured by the levels of specialization and technological development in 16 metropolitan cities and equivalent regional entities from 2014 to 2019. The results showed an inverted-U-shaped curve relationship between the number of new venture firms and the level of regional specialization. In addition, it turned out that the number of ventures are prone to be larger in specialized industries that belong to high-tech industries than low-and medium-tech industries. Based on the results, we suggested various policy implications that can boost the number of new venture firms in manufacturing industries for regional economic growth.

본 연구는 제조업 벤처 창업과 지역의 특화 산업 구조 간의 관계에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 벤처기업의 입지에 대한 연구는 다양하게 이루어졌으나, 기업의 성장 단계와 산업별 특성을 고려한 연구는 매우 드물다. 선행연구의 한계점을 보완하기 위해 본 연구는 전국 16개 광역시도의 2013년부터 2019년 기간 동안 창업한 제조업 벤처 기업들에 대한 정보와 더불어 시간의 흐름에 따라 이들 기업이 입지한 지역 내 제조업의 특화 수준과 기술 개발 수준에 대한 자료를 구축하였다. 패널 자료를 통해 분석한 결과 지역의 제조업 특화 수준은 제조업 창업 기업과 선형 관계가 아닌 역 U자형과 같은 관계를 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 지역 내 제조업의 기술 수준이 고위 기술 산업(high-tech)군에 해당할 경우 제조업 창업에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 이러한 분석 결과를 토대로 본 연구는 제조업 분야의 고위 기술 수준을 가지고 있는 지역의 벤처 창업을 위한 정책적 시사점을 도출하였다.
