This study investigated empowerment has been portrayed in life histories of Korean women who studied in western Europe in 1970-80s, through the life history research method. To fulfill the purpose of this study, researchers conducted qualitative research through the life history research method with two Korean women who studied in France and Germany. The results were analyzed by categorizing empowerment in individual's recognition of hopeless about the self, self-directed living life, and reflective attitude about life. The participants experienced disappointments and frustration in their lives through recognizing hopeless about the self. However, instead of giving up in reality, they developed their empowerment through personal leadership, interaction with others, cooperation, support, and the individual's persistent efforts. They lived to know how they can become the true self, and this continuous reflection of their lives has become a process of finding the self. In fact, there are number of Korean women that reside outside of Korea. Although they hold a strong identity as Koreans, only few connections exist between these women and their home country. For the mutual understanding and communication between Korean society and overseas Korean women, there is a need for various in-depth studies on them.

본 연구는 1970-80년대 서유럽으로 유학한 한인여성의 임파워먼트를 생애사 연구기법을 활용하여 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 프랑스와 독일로 각각 유학한 한국 여성 두 명을 대상으로 질적 연구를 수행하였다. 연구참여자들의 삶에 나타난 임파워먼트는 자신의 무력감에 대한 인식, 자기 삶에 대한 주도성, 그리고 삶에 대한 성찰적 자세로 구분하여 분석하였다. 연구참여자들은 삶에서 자신의 무력감에 관한 인지를 통해 실망과 좌절을 경험하였다. 그러나 이러한 현실에 굴복하는 대신 개인의 주도성과 주변 인물들과의 상호작용, 협력, 지지, 그리고 연구참여자 개인의 지속적인 노력을 통해 발전하였다. 이들은 생애 동안 자기 자신이 되는 삶을 살아왔으며, 계속되는 성찰적 삶은 자신을 찾는 과정이 되고 있었다. 많은 한국 여성들이 해외에 거주하고 있으며, 이들은 한국인 정체성을 가지고 있으나 한국과의 소통은 미약하다. 한국 사회와 재외한인 여성들의 상호이해와 소통을 위해 이들에 대한 다양하고 깊이 있는 연구가 요구된다.
