ture of the ideological basis and religious doctrines embedded in the dance performances of the Southeast Asian islands and to examine those dance performances in terms of their functions as an expression of culture. Firstly, the study extended its perspectives from the forms of Hinduism and Buddhism emphasized in Southeast Asian dance performances and presented such aspects that blended with folk ideologies. Secondly, the study conducted a detailed analysis on the elements of the symbolic items incorporated in the dance performances that were designed from the derived syncretic ideologies. Thirdly, the study explored the ethnic and social functions of those Southeast Asian dance performances. The study suggested that Southeast Asia, recognizing the importance of sharing communication with the invisible spirit world, visualized the unseen and intangible world of death through materials such as shadows, masks, and dolls. This implied that the completion of the figures for Southeast Asian dance performances did not simply originate from a single religious concept or doctrines of faith. Instead, it is the result of a mixture of ideas, thoughts, and beliefs that the tribes had long accumulated. An analysis of the items for the Southeast Asian dance performances and the ideas implanted in them indicated that the dance performances represented more than just ideological doctrines. They also retained a function that surpassed the typical levels of aesthetic enjoyment. The results of this research specifically reaffirmed that the Southeast Asian dance performances did not simply originate from a plain desire to inspire amusement or an artistic quest. Instead, they epitomized a repository comprised of a mixture of religious beliefs and spirits.

본 연구의 목적은 동남아에 속한 도서지역의 춤 연희에 내재된 종교적 교리와 혼재된 특성과 실체를 분석하고 나아가 표현문화로서의 현현적 기능을 규명하는 것이 다. 연구 내용은 첫째, 동남아 춤 연희에서 강조되는 힌두, 불교 등 국한적인 시각을 넓혀 토속사상들과의 혼재 양상을 제시한다. 둘째, 도출된 혼합주의 사상들로 설계된 춤 연희의 표상 종목들의 요소들을 세세히 분석한다. 셋째, 위의 동남아 춤 연희종목들 이 민족적, 사회적 측면에서 어떠한 기능을 하는지 밝힌다. 본 연구 수행과정에서 보이 지 않는 영적세계와 소통을 나누는 것을 가장 중요하게 인식하는 동남아는 볼 수도 만 질 수 도 없는 죽음의 세계를 ‘그림자’와 ‘가면’ 그리고 ‘인형’이라는 소재를 통해 보이는 것으로 만든 것임일 확인하였다. 이는 동남아 춤 연희 형상들이 완성되기까지 단순히 하나의 종교개념 또는 신앙의 교리에서 연원된 것이 아니며 오래전 종족들이 축척해 온 여러 가지 사상과 정신, 그리고 믿음들과 혼합된 결정체임을 보여준다. 연구는 동남 아 춤 연희 종목과 그에 녹아 있는 사상들을 분석함으로써 이들의 춤 연희가 사상적 교 리 그 이상을 대변하는 것과 상통하는 것이며 일반적인 미적 향유를 능가하는 기능을 담당하였음을 인식하였다. 연구 수행의 결과로 기존의 동남아 춤 연희는 제도적 종교 로부터 출발한 단순 도구의 추출물로만 된 것이 아니라 혼합적 양상의 신앙적 발현과 토속 정신의 중층적 삶의 보고임을 확인할 수 있었다.
