When it comes to Chinese character in the long history of the development of human civilization as the only ideographic writing systems that has been used up to now, it not only has the functional value of recording language, preserving culture and inheriting history, but also is the abstract visual symbols that carries the intelligent development, cognitive process and aesthetic evolution. As for the design of modern Chinese characters and the art of calligraphy, it is based on the form of Chinese characters and the expression of Chinese culture, which have original, interactive, and live state connection. In terms of calligraphy, it has almost preserved the font styles of each stage in the development history of Chinese characters, which also provides vivid visual information and rich cognitive experience for the study of Chinese character configuration and formal aesthetics. The implantation of the concept of time and space in calligraphy for the design of modern Chinese characters brings about different cognition of structural forms, which also strengthens the essential connotation of the co-movement of time and space. As for the reference of calligraphy stroke, knot and composition, it enriches the connotation and extension of modern Chinese character design theory. By starting from the noumenon of Chinese character form, it puts forward a more internal and profound cognitive concept for the highly abstract modern Chinese character from the micro to macro perspective through the care and discussion of stroke style, space frame structure and the arrangement of the whole article. What’s more, calligraphy can be expressed in various forms and ways in the design of modern Chinese characters. The calligraphy style embodies the unique charm no matter it is the digital simulation as well as the design and development of calligraphy font to meet the requirements of the times, or the separation and splicing of elements to pursue the aesthetic feeling of form, or the dynamic deduction and full sensory immersion experience to create the emotional artistic conception. Thus, it can be said that the way the modern Chinese character design absorbs and externalizes the connotation of calligraphy art can make Chinese characters and aesthetics, Chinese characters and culture, Chinese characters and national feelings closely connect to each other, so as to get expression and survival in line with the situation of the times.
