This paper examined the background of how the autobiography of “Zainichi”(2004) resonated with Japanese society and the attitude of Kang Sangjoong toward Japanese society as a ‘Zainichi.’ Kang Sangjoong’s act of writing his story and announcing it in Japanese society was established within the interactive relationship between ‘me who writes’ and ‘you who reads.’ ‘You who reads’ referred to Zainichi and ‘Japanese language community’ readers who were put under the same circumstances. The social interest in ‘multicultural symbiosis,’ which started out in Japan since the 1990s, came across the Zainichi autobiography trend in the 2000s. The autobiography of Lee Jinhee, published around the same time as “Zainichi” speaks of the ‘time’ and ‘ethnic group’ while focusing on ‘personal history’ and ‘achievement.’ On the contrary, Kang Sangjoong’s story is a ‘family story’ that focuses on ‘mother,’ which is approached more intimately in Japanese society. “Zainichi” places the issue of ‘ethnic discrimination’ in the background and talks about the ‘division’ of a person within the system called ‘society’ and ups and downs of the ‘time.’ The division is healed as Kang Sangjoong meets and communicates with people in Japanese society. The autobiography of Kang Sangjoong shows the anxiety of an individual about life, and ordinary Japanese readers could sympathize with it. There is no need to try reading the autobiographical writing of Kang Sangjoong in the context of ‘postmodernism’ and ‘postnationalism.’ “Zainichi” is a book that seeks the interaction between Zainichi and Japanese society with the ‘amateur’ pose explained by Edward Said. A Zainichi speaks with an attitude of ‘diaspora nationalism’ putting ‘individual utterance’ on Japanese society.

이 논문은 『재일 강상중』이라는 자서전이 일본 사회와 공명할 수 있었던 배경 과 ‘자이니치’로서의 강상중이 일본 사회와 대면하는 자세를 살폈다. 『재일 강상중』은 자이니치 강상중이 자기 이야기를 저술해 일본 사회에 공표하는 행위로 ‘쓰는 나’와 ‘읽는 당신’ 사이의 상호 작용의 관계 속에 성립했다. ‘읽는 당신’은 동일한 처지의 자이니치와 ‘일본어 공동체’ 독자였다. 1990년대부터 시작된 일본 내부의 ‘다문화공생’에 대한 사회적 관심이 2000년대 들어 자이니치 자서전 붐과 맞닿았다. 강상중과 비슷한 시기에 출간된 이진희의 자서전에는 개인 ‘이력’과 ‘업적’을 중심으로 ‘시대’와 ‘민족’을 말한다. 반면 강상중의 글은 일본 사회에 보 다 친밀하게 다가갈 수 있는 어머니를 메인에 둔 ‘가족 스토리’ 경향이 농후하다. 『재일 강상중』은 ‘민족 차별’의 문제를 후경에 두고 한 인간이 ‘사회’라는 제도, ‘시대’라는 굴곡 속에서 만나는 ‘분열’을 말한다. 분열은 일본 사회에서 만나는 사람들과 소통되며 극복된다. 강상중의 자서전은 한 개인의 삶을 통해 동일한 갈 등을 안는 일본 독자/대중의 스토리와 등치되는 효과를 낳았다. 강상중의 자전적 글에서 애써 ‘탈근대’와 ‘탈민족주의’를 읽으려는 노력을 기울일 필요가 없다. 강상중의 자서전은 ‘일본 사회’와 ‘자이니치’가 서로 무엇을 교환할 수 있고, 무엇 을 절충하며 살아갈 수 있을지를 자이니치 당사자의 입장에서 ‘고민’하며 묻고 있는 책이다. 그 가능성은 일본 사회에 ‘개별 발화’를 얹는 ‘디아스포라 민족주의’ 로 접근할 수 있음을 보여준다.
