This study investigated the features of operations and evaluation of the International Science Olympiads based on case analysis. For this, we analyzed the cases of the International Physics Olympiad, International Chemistry Olympiad, International Biological Olympiad, and International Earth Science Olympiad from three perspectives: their aims, the directions of operation and evaluation. As a result, firstly, the main aims of the International Science Olympiads can be summarized as follows: discovering the talented and gifted students in science areas, fostering students’ development and interests, expanding the networking between the students and experts in each field, and sharing educational approaches of the participant countries. In terms of the evaluation direction, the competitions have tried to reflect the nature of each discipline, especially the process of scientific practice and to evaluate the students’ understanding and creativity, rather than their memorizing and technical skills. Lastly, as for the direction of operations, each competition built its fair system, cared for students’ physical and psychological stability, and provided opportunities for students to participate as members of the academic community beyond personal growth. Based on these results, educational implications were discussed for the Olympiad competitions and gifted education in Korea.

이 연구의 목적은 국제과학올림피아드 운영 사례를 분석하여, 국제올림피아드 대회들의 운영 및 평가 방식에 서 나타나는 특징을 도출하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 국제물리올림피아드, 국제화학올림피아드, 국제생물올림피아드, 국제지구과학올림피아드 사례들을 운영 목적, 평가 방향 및 운영 방향 세 가지 관점에서 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 국 제과학올림피아드의 운영 목적은 인재 발굴 및 육성, 학문분야의 발전과 확장 도모, 각 분야별 전문가와 인재들 간의 활발한 교류 촉진, 교육 아이디어와 방향 공유로 정리할 수 있었다. 평가 방향의 측면에서 국제과학올림피아드들은 학문의 본질, 특히 과학적 실행 과정을 담고자 노력하였으며, 지식 암기가 아닌 이해를, 테크니컬한 기술보다는 실험 적 창의성을 추구하였다. 운영 방향의 측면에서 각 대회들은 공정한 시스템을 구축하고, 학생들의 신체적, 심리적 안정을 위해 배려하였으며, 학생들이 개인적 성장을 넘어서 학문 공동체의 일원으로 참여할 수 있는 기회를 제공하 고자 하였다. 끝으로 이러한 결과가 국내올림피아드 및 영재교육에 시사하는 바를 논의하였다.
