The purpose of this study is to examine how the leadership style affects the building of the organizational effectiveness focusing on the case of Guus Hiddink to the 2002 World-Cup Korean National Soccer Team. After the 2002 Korea & Japan Soccer World Cup, the biggest change in the Korean National Soccer team was the organizational culture through the transformational leadership by Hiddink. Traditionally, most of the coaches in the Korean soccer teams had a strong ‘command’ style of leadership that pushed the athletes to win the games to raise the reputation of the team and themselves, but after successful 2002 World Cup record, the transformational leadership style has been used by a lot of coaches and leaders in soccer teams in Korea. This study examines Hiddink’s transformative leadership style from three perspectives; leader with principle, leader with communicative capacities, and leader with passion, which are believed to be essential factors for Korea to accomplish more than expected in the 2002 Korea & Japan World Cup. This case study demonstrates that a leader should have transformational leadership to successfully and effectively deal with an organization and its members.

본 연구의 목적은 2002년 월드컵에서의 한국 국가대표팀의 감독인 거스 히딩크의 사례에 초점을 두고 리더십 스타일이 조직 효율성에 미치는 영향을 연구하기 위함이다. 2002 한일월드컵 이후 한국 국가대표팀은 히딩크의 영향으로 조직문화가 크게 변모하였다. 전통적으로 국가적 명성 및 개인의 명예를 고양하기 위한 ‘명령’스타일 리더십이 득세하였 으나 성공적인 2002년 월드컵의 성과를 통하여 변혁적 리더십 스타일이 한국의 코치와 지도자들에 의하여 선호되기 시작 하였다. 본 연구는 히딩크의 리더십이 한국 국가대표 축구팀의 효과성에 미친 영향을 세가지 관점에서 분석하고 있다; 원칙주의, 의사소통능력, 열정. 이는 변혁적 리더십의 대표적인 특성으로서, 이를 통하여 한국은 2002 한일 월드컵에서 한국이 기대 이상의 성취를 할 수 있었다. 본 사례 연구는 리더가 성공적, 효율적으로 조직과 팀원을 운영하기 위해서는 변혁적 리더십이 필요함을 보여준다.
