Architecture design of a country is decided and promoted under the influence of urban planning, culture of society and environment at national level. The building which member of society will use is the product reflecting ease of use and many considerations. We were born and we spend time at school during the most important period for the development of personality. However, several previous studies have shown that schools have only slightly changed in scale compared to our growth, but have remained almost unchanged. Since the modern era, school life has been studied in a rectangular classroom like a prison, where students dressed in school uniforms instead of clothes expressing their own personality, sitting on the same desk and chairs and studying. It is a school architecture design that is far from the environment where students can develop originality and creativity because they are accustomed to align their personal life in one frame of school. In order to educate students with creativity and originality as well as important spaces to cultivate talents representing a nation, changes in school architecture were needed. The purpose of this study is to suggest the current and future Korean school architecture design through the examples of European and Asian countries which have positive effect on the change of school architecture. Of course, these models are not perfect in the case of developed countries. Therefore, the future direction is to re-create the space for students reflecting Korean culture and emotion. The recent “Classroom with Dreams” project is an example of the changing design of Korean school architecture. If we continue to plan and supplement the design by reflecting Korean culture and curriculum through positive cases, it can be used as an advanced case of school architecture design in the future.

한 국가의 건축 디자인은 국가적 차원의 도시계획과 사회의 문화 그리고 환경 등에서 영향을 받으며 추진되고 결정된다. 사회 구성원이 사용할 건축물은 사용자의 편의와 여러 가지 고려사항을 반영한 결과물이다. 인간이 태어나 인격형성을 하는 가장 중요한 시기를 우리는 학교에서 보낸다. 하지만 우리가 성장하는 것에 비해 학교는 약간의 규모의 변동이 있었을 뿐, 거의 바뀌지 않았다는 것을 여러 선행연구를 통해 알 수 있었다. 근대 이후 학교생활은 교도소와 같은 직사각형의 교실에서 자신의 개성을 표현한 옷이 아닌 교복을 입고, 똑같은 모양의 책상과 의자에 앉아서 공부를 하고 식사를 해왔다. 학교라는 하나의 틀 안에 개인의 삶을 맞춰가는 것에 익숙한 나머지 학생들이 독창성과 창의성을 개발할 수 있는 환경과는 거리가 먼 학교 건축 디자인이었다. 한 국가를 대표하는 인재로 양성할 수 있는 중요한 공간이자, 창의성과 독창성을 겸비한 학생들을 교육할 수 있도록 학교 건축의 변화가 필요했다. 이에 본 연구는 학교 건축의 변화로 긍정적인 효과를 보이고 있는 유럽과 아시아 국가의 사례를 통하여 한국 교육의 현재와 향후 한국 학교 건축 디자인을 제안하고자 한다. 물론, 선진국 사례라고 해서 이들 모델이 완벽하지는 않기에 한국의 문화, 정서 등이 반영된 학생들을 위한 공간으로 재창조해가는 것이 앞으로의 연구 방향이라고 판단된다. 최근 “꿈을 담은 교실” 프로젝트는 한국 학교 건축 디자인이 변화하고 있음을 보여준 사례이다. 긍정적인 사례를 통해 한국의 문화와 교육과정 등을 반영하여 지속적으로 디자인 계획과 보완을 해나간다면, 향후 학교 건축 디자인의 선진 사례로 활용될 수 있을 것이라 생각한다.
