This study aims to explore the motivation and characteristics of citizens who participate in community energy activities such as energy cooperatives and analyze factors that sustain and reinforce their action. So far, domestic community energy research has focused on suggesting the ways to activate energy cooperatives, and there are no studies on factors affecting community energy diffusion behavior. For the analysis, we surveyed the members of energy cooperatives in Gyeonggi-do. Normative motivation, including environmental motivation, was found to be a key driver of community energy participation, which showed a statistically significant positive correlation with an individual 's environment-friendly tendency and local social capital. As a result of the ranked logit analysis, the more the abundance of social capital such as neighbors network, and trust, and the greater the sense of efficacy that people feel contributes to solving energy and climate change problems through union activities, it was found that people make more active efforts to expand community energy. It is important to identify factors that affect individuals' motivation, to strengthen the social capital of the community, and to provide feedback on the outcomes of the collective action and belief in the effectiveness of participation in promoting community energy participation and strengthening activities.
