This study aims to investigate the relationships between electricity consumption and economic growth in Korea. The study uses the regional panel data of electricity sales volume and GRDP in seven metropolitan cities and nine provinces. The study performs panel unit root test and panel cointegration test, and estimates panel vector autoregression (PVAR) model. The empirical results can be summarized as follows. First, there is no long-term relationships between the electric power consumption and the economic growth. Secondly, although the economic growth does not affect the power consumption in the short-term, the power consumption has led to the economic growth. Third, the power consumption in the large cities affects the short-term economic fluctuations, but not in the provinces.

본 연구는 전력소비량과 경제성장 사이의 동태적 인과관계를 16개 행정구역(시도)별 전력판매량과 지역내총생산의 연간자료로 구성된 지역패널자료를 이용하여 분석하였다. 패널 단위근 검정과 패널 공적분 검정을 수행한 결과, 패널 VAR 모형이 적절하다고 판단되어 이 모형을 추정하고 그 결과를 분석하였다. 주요 실증분석의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 전력소비와 경제성장 사이에는 장기균형관계가 존재하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 단기적으로 경제성장은 전력소비에 영향을 미치지 못하지만 전력소비는 경제성장을 선도하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 대도시의 전력소비는 단기적 경기변동의 영향을 받지만 도지역에서는 그런 영향이 나타나지 않았다. 또 전력소비가 단기적으로 경제성장을 선도하는 효과는 대도시에서는 나타나지만 도지역에서는 나타나지 않았다.
