Jeong Yak-yong pursued moral training, principles, politics and state system reform by propriety while seeking the contents of spiritual training of the saint in Ye-ak(禮樂). After completing the study on Yukgyeong(六經) and Saseo(四書), he wrote 『Minor Annotation of Elementary Learning』 and 『Private Examination of Classic of the Mind』. In 『Minor Annotation of Elementary Learning』 and 『Private Examination of Classic of the Mind』, the methods and practices for inner and outer moral training are presented from the aspect of propriety. The adult's spiritual training that Jeong Yak-yong emphasized is the way humans should follow, and this way is based on propriety. The practical statement of ethics can exert its power when it is based on propriety. 『Minor Annotation of Elementary Learning』 focuses on the habituation of the propriety related to ‘Doye(道藝)’, and 『Private Examination of Classic of the Mind』 highlights the propriety for recovery to 'smart human'. Jeong Yak-yong emphasizes the importance of 'being cautious when one knows alone(愼獨)' in internalizing propriety. 'Being cautious when one knows alone' is also established on the relations with others. Relations with others can be meaningful when they are proved to be actual through 'event(行事)'. He keenly realized the necessity of Confucianist(儒者) who acquired propriety in order to implement the politics by the propriety devised in Gyeongseseo(經世書). The Confucianists who acquired the propriety can have the status as those responsible for the society, culture and politics.

정약용은 성인의 도의 내용을 예악에서 찾으면서 예법에 의한 인성의 수신과 규율, 정치 및 국가 제도 개혁을 추구했다. 정약용은 육경과 사서 연구를 완성하고 난 후 『소학지언』과 『심경밀험』을 저술했다. 『소학지언』과 『심경밀험』에는 예법적 측면에서 심신의 내외적 수신을 위한 방법과 실천이 제시되어 있다. 정약용이 강조한 성인의 도는 사람이 따라서 가야하는 길인데 이 길은 예법을 근간으로 하고 있다. 윤리 도덕의 실천적 언명은 예법을 근간으로 할 때 강력한 힘을 발휘할 수 있다. 『소학지언』은 ‘도예’와 관련된 예법의 습관화에 중점을 두었으며, 『심경밀험』은 ‘영명한 인간’의 회복을 위한 예법을 강조했다. 정약용은 예법을 내면화할 때 신독의 중요성을 강조한다. 신독 역시 타인과의 관계위에서 성립한다. 타인과의 관계는 ‘행사’를 통해 실제적인 것으로 드러날 때 의미를 갖는다. 정약용은 경세서에서 구상된 예법에 의한 정치를 구현하기 위해서 예법을 체득한 유자의 필요성을 절감했다. 예법을 체득한 유자가 사회 문화와 정치의 담당자로서 위상을 가질 수 있다.
