The purpose of this study is to collect, to classify education archives of Joseon Seowon, and to examine characteristics of education archives. The subjects of this study are Sosu-Seowon, Dosan-Seowon, Dodong-Seowon, Oksan-Seowon, Donam-Seowon. According to the contents and nature of the archives, I divided educational archives into four types: the record of rules of Seowon education, the record of actual education, the record of ritual, and the record of financial. First, through the record of rules, I have identified how the rules are passed down and changed from Seowon to Seowon and impact of book publishing and distribution on changes in Seowon Curriculum. Secondly, through the record of educational practice, I have examined the size of students participating in Seowon education, the role of officers, the procedures and methods of education, the daily routine in Seowon, the methods of discussion and questions in lectures, and the role of teachers in discussions etc. Third, through the record of rituals, I examined customary rituals such as Gyeongdok(敬 讀), the rites for opening class(開接禮) and the last class(罷接禮), and the rites for Master-Disciple Relationshipe(贄禮) in addition to official rites such as Jeongeuprye(庭揖 禮) and Sangeuprye(相揖禮). Fourth, through the record of financial, we could see how the late Joseon Seowon tried to continue the education by setting up a financial institution dedicated to education despite severe financial difficulties. The classification criteria and the typification method of education archives of Joseon Seowon that have been attempted in this study can be used as a model for systematically collecting and organizing the education archives of Joseon Seowon. However, this needs to be supplemented and discussed further. In addition, if a methodology can be developed to collect a wide range of materials that have been scattered over various materials through the classification and typification of the materials, it will contribute to expanding the horizon of Seowon research in the future.

이 연구는 소수, 도산, 도동, 옥산, 돈암서원 등 5개 서원을 대상으로 조선시대 서원 강 학(講學) 관련 자료를 수집하여, 이를 유형화하고 서원별 강학의 특징을 검토하는 데 목 적이 있다. 이를 위해 강학 자료를 분류하기 위한 타당한 분류 기준을 확립하고, 자료의 내용과 성격에 따라 크게 규약류․강학 시행 기록․강학 의례·강학 재정 관련 기록의 네 가 지로 유형화하였다. 첫째, 규약류 자료를 통해서는 학파, 당파별 원규의 계승과 절목에 나타난 원규의 변용, 서적의 간행과 유통이 교육과정에 미치는 영향 등을 확인하였다. 둘째, 강학 시행 기록 중 강안류 자료를 통해서는 참여자의 규모와 소임 및 고강성적, 일기류 자료에서는 강학의 절차와 시행 방법 및 서원에서의 하루 일과, 강록류 자료에서는 통독 시 토론 방법과 문답 의 수준, 토론 시 훈장의 역할 등을 확인할 수 있었다. 셋째, 강학 의례에서는 정읍례나 상읍례의 정식적 의례 외에도 경독, 개접례, 파접례, 지례(贄禮), 수창시 등 관습적 의례를 살펴보았다. 넷째, 강학 재정 관련 자료를 통해서는 조선 후기 각 서원의 재정난에도 불구하고, 양사청, 강학계 등 강학 전담 재정기구를 설치 하여 강학 개설을 시도하고자 했던 각 서원의 노력을 엿볼 수 있었다. 강학 의례 중 ‘지례’는 조선시대 관학에는 없었던 ‘택사(擇師)’의 교육적 의미, 근대교육 이 결한 사제관계의 교육적 함의를 드러내며, 상읍례와 정읍례를 통해서는 도덕적 마음 과 관계의 훈련이 의례를 통해 어떻게 훈련되고 내면화되는지를 확인할 수 있다. 또한 서 원 강학의 마지막 절차가 시험이나 평가가 아니라 각자 강학에서 얻은 교육의 성과를 나누고 공유하는 수창시로 갈무리된다는 사실은, ‘이택지력(麗澤之力)’을 실현하는 교육공 동체로서 서원의 의미를 잘 보여준다. 이 같은 서원 강학 의례의 교육적 의미는 관계에 대한 훈련의 문제가 매우 절실한 현대 교육에 하나의 대안으로서 큰 시사점을 제공해 줄 수 있다.
