One of the purposes of Christian education is discipleship and citizen training. However, the church has only cultivated half-believers who act only in the church, not perfect believers living as disciples and citizens, subject to deformed discipleship. The social credibility of Christianity is getting weaker because life is not accompanied by the appearance of true faith and personality education. The purpose of this study is to explore the educational ministry of John Wesley in the 18th century in order to overcome moral discipleship and to pursue discipleship. Wesley’s purpose of establishing true faith and personality in pursuing holiness of heart and life, which leads to social sanctification, is not only a personal faith, but also a Christian doctrine, especially of Methodism, ministry, and practice it is the core. This paper studied the formation of right faith and humanity through Wesley’s methods of discipleship. In particular, ado-lescence is a good opportunity to establish the identity of faith and life, and to form the potential to engage and serve others. It is the Christian education mission to teach and strengthen the two dimensions for the formation of the humanity in the youth period in which the identity of faith and life should be established, one being the ‘vertical belief’ toward God and the ‘horizontal love’ to be. Wesley presented this as “loving God and neighbor”, and responded responsibly to God’s grace through means of grace, such as prayer, meditation, the sacrament, and good works. This article presents John Wesley’s pastoral ministries of teaching methods for the youth of the Church in this age to be Christ’s disciples and to live as good citizens of the world. Therefore, we should pursue discipleship education which is not a believer who works only in the church, but a faith and a humanity formation that contributes to society in a balanced manner.

기독교교육의 목적 가운데 하나는 제자화와 시민양성이다. 그러나 대부 분의 교회는 제자화에 치우쳐 제자와 시민으로서 살아가는 온전한 신자 가 아닌, 교회 안에서만 활동하는 반쪽 신자만을 양성해왔다. 진실한 신 앙과 인성의 교육을 통해 드러나야 하는 삶의 모습이 동반되지 않아 기독 교의 사회적 공신력은 갈수록 약화되어가고 있다. 본 연구는 제자화에만 치우친 모습을 극복하고 제자시민화를 추구하는 교육방법론을 고찰하기 위해 18세기 존 웨슬리의 교육목회을 탐구하고 자 한다. 올바른 신앙은 개인적 성결에 그치는 것이 아니라, 사회적 성화 로 이어져 마음과 삶의 거룩성(Holiness of Heart and Life)을 추구해 야 하는 웨슬리의 목적은 기독교, 특히 감리교 교리와 목회 및 실천의 핵 심이다. 본 논문은 웨슬리의 제자시민화 방법들을 통해 올바른 신앙과 인성의 형성을 연구하였다. 특히 신앙과 삶의 정체성을 확립하고 다른 사람들과 관계 맺고 봉사할 수 있는 잠재력을 형성할 수 있는 좋은 기회 이다. 이를 위해 두 차원, 하나는 하나님을 향한 ‘수직적 믿음’인 제자화와 이웃을 향한 ‘수평적 사랑’인 도덕성을 전수하고 강화시키는 것은 기 독교교육적 사명이다. 웨슬리는 이것을 ‘하나님 사랑, 이웃 사랑’(loving God and neighbor)으로 제시했으며, 기도와 말씀묵상, 성찬, 선행과 같은 은혜의 방편들(means of grace)을 통해 하나님의 은혜에 책임적 으로 응답할 수 있다고 보았다. 본 논문은 이 시대를 살아가는 교회의 성도들이 그리스도의 제자인 동시 에 세상의 선한 시민으로서 살아가기 위한 교육방법들을 존 웨슬리의 목 회사역들을 통해 제시하였다. 이를 통해 교회 안에서만 활동하는 신앙인 이 아닌, 사회에 공헌하는 신앙과 인성형성이 균형 있게 발현되고 실천 되는 제자시민화 교육을 기대한다.
