『Flower and Snake』 of Kim Mal-bong, who posed as 'a public novelist' while publishing novels in installments in a newspaper or a magazine, is a novel that shows both a religious tinge and a fantasy element with a material of man and woman's love. So far, studies of Kim Mal-bong's literature have been made with a focus on 『Wild Rose』 and they couldn't get out of a popular vein. Therefore, 『Flower and Snake』 was selected to expand and diversify the scope of the literature studies. Especially, this dissertation was studied with a focus on ambilaterality expressed in his novel, getting out of dichotomical thought as a popular novel and a serious novel. Kim Mal-bong described the ambilaterality in this novel: popularity and artistry, a world of desire and a world of religion, reality and fantasy, and so on. Moreover, he was showed as a popular novelist by constructing the story consistent with reader's interest and emotions.

신문이나 잡지에 소설을 연재하면서 ‘대중소설가’임을 자처했던 김말봉의 꽃 과 뱀 은 남녀의 애정문제를 소재로 종교적인 색채와 판타지적 요소를 함께 보여 주는 소설이다. 지금까지 김말봉 문학연구는 찔레꽃 에 집중되어 있었고, 통속성 의 범주를 크게 벗어나지 못하고 있었기 때문에, 문학연구 범위의 확대와 다양화 를 위해 꽃과 뱀 을 텍스트로 하였다. 특히 본고는 대중소설과 본격소설이라는 이분법적 사고를 벗어나 그의 소설이 가지고 있는 양면성에 집중해서 고찰하였다. 김말봉은 이 소설에서 대중성과 예술성, 욕망의 세계와 종교의 세계, 현실과 판타 지 등의 양면성을 그려내고, 독자의 흥미와 정서에 부합하는 이야기와 구성으로 인기 소설가로서의 면모를 보여주었다.
