Recently, democratic citizenship education has received a spotlight in terms of its educational nature and necessities, both home and abroad. Considering that, this study tried to figure out future directions of the democratic citizenship education in a macro view: First, a moral aspect that gives a basic foundation. Second, an integrative aspect that provides a principle for selection and organization of contents. Third, a daily aspect that shares a principle for educational methods and applications. These three are in order basically, but they can interact with each other. Using the philosophies of these three directions, democratic citizenship education can be practiced with multiple strategies such as creating a new subject, converting an existing subject, or reinforcing related content elements in existing subjects. In each case, moral education should play the key role in establishing the direction and selecting the contents, since democratic citizenship education should be founded based on morality first.

최근 교육 본질적 측면 및 국내외적 필요성과 함께 민주시민교육과 관 련한 논의가 많은 주목을 받고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 민주시민교 육이 지향해야 할 바를 세 가지 측면, 즉 그 근본적 토대를 제공하는 ‘도덕성’, 내용의 선정 및 조직의 원리를 제공하는 ‘통합성’ 그리고 실 행에 있어서의 방법 및 적용의 원리를 제공하는 ‘일상성’의 관점에서 탐색해 보았다. 그리고 세 지향점이 도덕성을 기초로 통합성 그리고 일상성의 방향으로 나아가되, 내용의 특성상 일방향적인 것이 아닌 유 기적으로 상호작용하는 관계라는 점을 언급하였다. 이와 같은 특성을 지니는 민주시민교육은 다양한 전략 및 방안을 가지고 효과적으로 실 행될 수 있는데, 여기서는 교과목의 신설이나 기존 교과목을 전환하는 경우 및 기존 교과 내용 체계에서의 관련 내용 요소를 강화하는 경우 를 살펴보며 도덕과교육이 도덕적 맥락에서의 방향 설정과 내용 선정 측면에서 중심적 역할을 수행해야 함을 주장하였다.
