This paper examines the In and Sŏ concept of Chŏng Yakyong(1762-1836) in its exploration of the tradition of in Korean traditional thoughts. He is the person who sought to construct the new Confucius society in the late Chosŏn period and moved on to systematically integrate Sil-hak, a Confucius school of a practical vein in the late Chosŏn period. In these endeavors, He redefined the central values of Confucianism, In and Sŏ. In is 'the love for others for the coexistence of the members of a society'. Sŏ, the practical principles of In, is 'the principle of parity between the self and others'. He wanted to end the universal political and social struggles and violence and to pursue peace and happiness through this re-conceptualization of In and Sŏ. In relation to feminism, it is hard to get direct message from his thoughts but I would show that discussing the feministic implications of the In / Sŏ is possible. I believe that we can overcome the problems caused by modern individualism and self-interested ethics through his concept of In/Sŏ. It would provide no small amount of insights in re-claiming the relational ethics based on mutual-interest today.

이 논문은 한국 전통사상 속에서 비폭력적 사유 전통을 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 공자(孔子)와 맹자(孟子)의 비폭력 사유전통을 살펴봄으로써 원시유가의 특징을 살펴보았다. 이어서 조선 후기 새로운 유교적 문명공동체 재건을 고민하였고, 그 결과 마침내 실학의 집대성이라는 업적을 성취한 다산(茶山) 정약용(丁若鏞, 1762-1836)의 인(仁)과 서(恕) 개념을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 공자는 춘추시대 폭력이 질서의 기준이 되는 것을 목도하고 비폭력적 질서, 나아가 평화에 의한 질서 구축을 위해 仁과 禮 질서 복구를 추장하였다. 이것이 유교의 창시이다. 맹자는 예질서 회복이 어려운 전국시대의 본질을 인지하고 仁과 義의 질서 수립을 역설하였다. 공맹의 이러한 사상은 후진들, 특히 조선의 다산에게서는 仁/恕의 사상을 나타났다. 다산에게서 인은 ‘타인을 향한 사랑’이고, 서는 ‘진실한 마음으로 타인을 자신과 같은 시선에서 이해하는 것’이라고 정의하고 있다. 이러한 그의 인/서 개념은 본질적으로 ‘비폭력’ 지향뿐만이 아니고 ‘적극적인 평화주의’를 추구할 수밖에 없다고 하겠다.
