This article is a study of 'ambiguity' in Korean modern poetry. Especially, W. Empson 's three types of ambiguity are most commonly applied to modern Korean poetry. The three types of ambiguity in W. Empson are defined as 'homonyms', 'words with the same sound but with different meanings, or words with multiple meanings totally different from one sound'. These homonyms are found in many Korean folktales and folk songs, but the influence of modern Korean poetry has been widened, which directly or indirectly influences the poetry poems of the 1920s and 1930s. In particular, it seems that Kim So-wol and Jung Ji-yong, who are considered the most prominent figures in modern Korean cities, actively used the word of homonym more than anyone else. Through this, it can be seen that poet uses his poetic element as a poetic element to reveal his complex inner psychology.

이 글은 한국 현대시에 나타난 ‘애매성’에 대한 연구다. 특히 W. 엠프슨이 말한 애매성의 3유형은 한국 현대시에 가장 보편적으로 적용된다. W. 엠프슨이 주장하고 있는 애매성의 3유형은 ‘동음이의어’로 ‘소리는 같으 나 의미가 서로 다른 관계에 있는 낱말, 혹은 하나의 소리에 전혀 다른 여러 개의 의미가 결합되어 있는 낱말’로 정의 된다. 이러한 동음이의어는 우리나라의 시조나 민요에서 많이 나타나고 있지만, 한국 현대시의 자장이 넓혀짐에 따라 1920～30년대의 시인들의 시에도 직․간접적인 영향을 미치게 된다. 특히 한국 현대시의 대표주자라 할 수 있는 김소월 과 정지용은 누구보다 ‘동음이의어’를 적극적으로 활용한 것으로 보인다. 이를 통해 시인 자신의 복잡한 내면 심리 를 드러내는 시적 요소로 요긴하게 활용하고 있음을 알 수 있다.
