Yeats and Eliot, in each of their poems, redefine the Magi, according to their imagination and the demands of the times. Eliot focuses on the salvation of man and his society through the memory of Magi. Yeats conveys to his readers the symbol of stars, the prophetic priests, and history. “Journey of the Magi” exemplifies the birth and death of Christ Jesus, the Savior who will come into the world, the resurrection, and the second coming, requesting religiosity, morality, recovery of humanity and personality. On the other hand, “The Magi” warns us against too much optimism about modern science and asks us to pay attention to the historical cycle of the Second Coming and the Judgment of the world.

예이츠와 엘리엇의 동방박사는 시인의 상상력과 시대의 요청에 따른 새로운 동방박사의 모습을 재현한다. 엘리엇은 동방박사의 기억을 통하여 인간과 사회의 구원에 초점을 맞추었다. 예이츠는 시인의 눈을 통하여 차가운 별과 같은 존재, 예언을 하는 사제, 역사에 대한 상징으로 동방박사를 독자들에게 전달한다. 엘리엇의 ｢동방박사의 여정｣은 그리스도의 탄생뿐만 아니라 그의 죽음과 부활, 그리고 재림으로 다시 오실 구세주를 그리면서 현대인이 상실한 종교성, 도덕성, 윤리성, 인성의 회복을 추구한다. 반면 예이츠의 ｢동방박사｣는 현대과학에 대한 지나친 낙관을 버리고 역사적인 순환에 의한 재림과 세상의 심판에 대비하여 경계를 늦추지 않기를 경고하고 있다.
