The objective of this paper is to show the influence of Volumnia among many factors that have an effect on the play and the hero in Shakespeare’s Coriolanus. Volumnia, Coriolanus’ mother, plays an important role in contributing to the theme and illuminating the hero. Coriolanus is continually manipulated by his mother. Her method of manipulation keeps him from maturing. So, Coriolanus is crippled by his mother’s distorted view of the world. In the end, Coriolanus is dominated by his mother all his life. I arrived at a conclusion: In Coriolanus Volumnia dominates and controls the play and the hero.
