This is a study on English Phoneme Discrimination Ability (EPDA) acquisition for Japanese monolingual learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), based on the hypothesis that EPDA is important for EFL speech production in Japan. The study aims to develop an EPDA (English Phoneme Discrimination Ability) acquisition training method beneficial for speech production. EPDA is a phonetic coding ability that is used to discriminate phonemes that are specific to the English language. It plays an important role for language use and is naturally acquired as a mother tongue but is not easy when it becomes a foreign language and Japanese are not an exception. Many Japanese monolinguals have trouble on distinguishing consonant phonemes such as l/r, s/ʃ , and m/n/ŋ due to the native Japanese linguistic environment. Many people lack confidence in English communication, because they are unable to recognize words in a sentence. According to our previous research, we found that REPL (Repetitive English Phoneme Listening) activity could be very effective for EPDA acquisition. Therefore in this study, an EPDA acquisition training development using REPL was designed, performed and evaluated. Participants were native Japanese university students. Their training performances were evaluated by (i) a common listening test, (ii) a readout task, (iii) comprehension based on the training content. As a result, our REPL training performance showed a significant effect by ANOVA and regression analysis.
