This essay focus on the continuation and change of village rituals of fishing villages in the eastern coast of Pohang-city area. It is well known that the transmission of folk rituals in fishing village is usually well succeeded among any other ecological areas. Findings at 16 fishing villages in the eastern coast of Pohang-city area support this old thesis. Although proceedings of rituals are simplified, every village holds traditional village rituals once or twice every year. Patron deities of each village are thought as both natural deities in charge of heaven, mountain or sea, and ancestors of certain families of the village regarded as pioneer of the village several hundred years ago. Proceedings of rituals and composition of ritual place have become standardization. So the proceedings of rituals have changed from folk style to confucian style and the composition of ritual place have changed from natural things like rocks, trees or springs etc. to shrines. These imply social structure and social history of the fishing villages and reflect enthusiasm of residents contrive to get the higher position of social hierarchy and share the high-level culture.
