This thesis is to study the image of women depicted in the works of Akutagawa Ryunosuke taking the subject of the Meiji civilization era.One can not overlook the fact that women was a main subject in his three works written about the civilization era.In his works, women were described as civilized citizen living in the civilization era, yet there is a hint of minus and negative image. It is obvious the women appeared in his works; 「Husband of Civilization」 is heavily influenced by the negative image of the 'New Woman' from the women's magazine 「Seitou」 that received the cynical criticism from the journalism then.It is clear that Akutagawa took a positive and friendly stand toward the women's liberation but on the other hand he had a negative and disallowing view against their lowness and immoral speeches and behaviors. Ultimately, it is well noted in the study of the thesis that Akutagawa was not against the civilization of Japan but he was criticizing the shallowness and superficiality that the civilization of Meiji implies.
