Assistive technologies help a person with a disability to carry out job functions by reducing, relieving, or eliminating the status of the persons with disabilities through assistive technologies in order for the persons with disabilities who were impossible to rehabilitate job functions at all in the past to receive the protection of humane lives in social integrated environment. These assistive technologies had started to attract attention from 1990s in Korea and in 2000s, it is provided as a part of activation of the employment of workers with disabilities but it is still insufficient in systematic support.
People with disability was not easy to find a job in US where there was prejudice of the employers, a lack of expert knowledge and training, and insufficiency of economic feasibility. However, the most important reason was not enough assistive technology devices which helps accomplishing their duties. Therefore, if there is a opportunity where people with disability could use appropriate assistive technology devices, the rate of hiring people with disability would be significantly increased. At last, assistive technology service is an essential factor that helps people with disability to perform their duty in the stage of vocational rehabilitation.
For this reason, in this research, we have suggested a study of improvement effects of assistive technologies service to facilitate social participation and the employment of workers with disabilities.

보조공학은 그 동안 직업재활이 전혀 불가능 하였던 장애인이 사회통합적인 환경 속에서 인간다운 생활을 보장받도록 하기 위해 공학적인 기술을 활용하여 장애인의 장애상태를 경감, 완화 또는 제거시켜 줌으로서 직무수행이 가능하도록 돕고 있다. 이러한 보조공학 서비스는 우리나라에서 1990년대부터 관심이 증대되기 시작하여 2000년대에는 장애인고용을 활성화시키기 위한 일환으로 제공되고 있으나 아직까지 제도적인 뒷받침이 부족한 실정이다.
미국에서도 고용주의 편견, 전문지식과 훈련의 부족, 경제성의 결여 등으로 인해 장애인의 취업이 어렸지만 가장 중요한 이유로는 장애인의 직무수행을 도울 수 있는 보조고학기기가 부족하기 때문인 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 장애인이 작업현장에서 적절한 보조공학기기를 사용할 수 있도록 기기를 제공해 준다면 장애인고용은 보다 촉진될 것이다. 결국 보조공학 서비스는 장애인이 직업재활 단계에서 안정적으로 직업생활을 할 수 있도록 돕는 매우 중요한 요소라고 할 수 있다.
이에 본 연구에서는 장애인의 사회참여와 장애인고용의 활성화를 위한 보조공학 서비스의 효과성을 연구하였다.
