Video consultation is conducted through electronic face-to-face contact devices rather than physical and personal contact. For video consulting communication, smart devices such as I-Pad and Galaxy Tab may be recommendable in the inside of correctional facilities, and consultants practicing outside the facilities may be advised to employ the more prevalent smart phones. As a matter of fact, video consultation is not introduced and practiced in correctional facilities. In this regard, to explore the feasibility of video consultation based on smart electronic devices based on previous theoretical studies, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 270 male inmates in 5 male-only correctional facilities, and on 85 female inmates in one female-only facility. The findings showed that, of all the inmates surveyed, 80.4 % of the male inmates and 69.4% of the female inmates responded that they are in need of video consultation, which may suggest that the correctional authorities should consider practicing this new correctional communication system. If the corrective service department puts into practice this new communication system, it may be suggested that inmates will have more opportunities to relieve their mental and physical troubles, which will contribute to the goals of stable in-prison serving and ultimate edification for resocialization.

화상상담은 직접 대면접촉을 통해 하는 것이 아니라 화상을 통해 서로 얼굴을 보면서 하는 상담을 말한다. 화상상담의 형태는 교정시설 내부는 스마트 기기(I-Pad, 갤럭시 탭 등)로 하고 외부 상담사는 스마트 폰을 이용하여 상담하는 방식을 말한다. 아직 교정시설에서는 화상상담을 실시하지 않고 있으므로 기존 이론적 연구를 바탕으로 스마트 기기를 이용한 화상상담이 실천 가능한지를 알아보기 위해 각 교정청별로 남자 교정시설 5개소 270명, 여자 교정시설 1개소 85명을 대상으로 설문조사를 행하였다. 조사결과 남성수형자는 80.4%, 여성수형자는 69.4%가 화상상담을 필요로 하고 있으므로 교정당국이 실시를 고려해볼 필요가 있다. 만약 교정당국이 실시를 한다면 갇힌 수용생활에 따른 마음의 병을 치유할 수 있을 것이고, 이로 인해 수용생활 안정과 교정의 궁극적 목표인 교화의 목적을 달성할 수 있을 것이다.
