Elderly and impaired prisoners are relatively alienated from education, counseling, vocational training and labor in correctional facilities. As a result of this, they, especially old inmates, have to spend weary hours, and their communications are focused on daily routines rather than on corrective activities, contributing little to the goal of correction and re-socialization. Furthermore, some have to endure a lonely life because they have family members at all or relatives do not visit them. Loneliness has a great adverse effect on self-esteem, sometimes leading to depression and even dementia. Therefore, now is the time to establish and implement policies to facilitate productive communications and alleviate loneliness among old and disabled inmates. As a preliminary step to accomplish this, it is suggested that emotional robots should be introduced in corrective facilities in order to ensure constant communications, regular reading activities, and emotional stabilization, which can help re-socialize inmates through inmates’ physical and mental well-being and attitude changes.

노인 및 장애인 수형자는 교정시설 내에서 교육, 상담, 직업훈련, 노역 등에서 제외되어 상대적으로 소외된 상태이다. 이로 인해 거실에서 무료한 시간을 보내고 있고, 노인들 간 의사소통도 교화와 관련된 이야기보다는 일상적인 대화로 교정의 궁극적 목표인 교정·교화에 아무런 도움이 되지 못하고 있다. 또한 가족이 없거나 가족이 있어도 찾아오지 않아 늘 외롭고 쓸쓸한 나날을 보내고 있다. 고독감은 자아존중감 향상에 악영향을 미치며, 우울증과 치매, 더 나아가 자살에도 영향을 미치고 있다. 따라서 노인 및 장애인 수형자의 원활한 의사소통과 고독감을 없앨 수 있는 국가 정책적 배려가 필요한 시점이다. 이를 위한 방안으로 교정시설 내 감성로봇을 도입하여 상시적 의사소통과 독서활동 그리고 정서적 안정을 통해 안정적인 수용생활과 의식변화를 유도하여 출소 후 재사회화가 될 수 있도록 하는 것이다.
