This study aimed to analyze the impact of the self-esteem of college students on their awareness of supporting the elderly, and to draw practical and policy implications to raise college students’ awareness of supporting the elderly in Korea. In this study, a survey was conducted among 250 students enrolled in an university located in Gangwon-do using a structured questionnaire, and out of the 250 questionnaires distributed, 230 questionnaires were used in the final statistical analysis. SPSS 21.0 Version was used to analyze the collected data, and the analyzed results are as follows. The results of a goodness-of-fit test for the regression model on the impact of the self-esteem of college students on their awareness of financial, emotional and physical supports were all found to be suitable. Likewise, the results of the impact analysis of college students’ self-esteem on their awareness of supporting the elderly were all statistically significant, and thus it is possible to conclude that the improvement of self-esteem can be effective to address issues associated with supporting the elderly. Recommendations for policy were drawn based on the results as follows. First, it is necessary to develop proper programs to ensure smooth relationships can be built between children, parents and grandparents in the family. Second, it is also recommended to ensure quality home and school education can be provided simultaneously for college students to continuously build positive values and self-esteem from their growing period.

본 연구는 대학생들의 자아존중감이 노인부양의식에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가를 분석하여, 우리나라 대학생들의 노인부양의식을 고취시키기 위한 실천적․정책적 함의를 찾는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구대상은 강원지역에 소재한 대학의 재학생 250명을 대상으로 구조화된 설문지를 사용하여 조사하였으며 그 중 230부의설문지를 최종적으로 통계 분석하였다. 자료분석은 SPSS 21.0 Version을 사용하였고 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 대학생들의 자아존중감이 경제적․정서적․신체적 부양의식에 미치는 영향에 대한 회귀모형의 적합도 분석결과 모두 적합한 것으로 나타났다. 이렇듯 대학생들의 자아존중감이 노인부양의식에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과 모두 통계적으로 유의미한 것임을 볼 때 자아존중감 향상은 노인부양문제를 해결하는데 효과가있다고 하겠다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 다음과 같은 정책적 제언을 하고자 한다. 첫째, 가정 내에서 자녀와 부모그리고 조부모의 원활한 관계형성이 이루어지도록 적절한 프로그램개발이 필요하다. 둘째, 대학생들의 자아존중감 향상을 위해 성장과정부터 긍정적인 가치관이 형성되도록 내실 있는 가정교육과 공교육이 병행해서 이루어져야 된다고 사료된다.
