A film interpreter in Chosun era is different from that in Japan from beginning and its development. A silence film is very awkward to Chosun people because they used to enjoy and feel things aurally and visually. Audiences wanted the silence film to have audio, so that they put the film interpreter. These fierce need could not be found in any other countries including Japan. Thus, the film interpreters in other countries only did introduce the film or the character before the film started.However, the film interpreters in Chosun, they were capable of performing the audio which is lack of the silence film, and put lots of effort to make a combination of visual image and voice. Moreover, during the Japanese Colonial Period, people of Chosun wanted the interpreter to perform a critic not just offerer of the audio or a commentator. However, the interpreters did not live up to the expectations even though they got the focus. the audiences criticized them. Some tried to accept the critics and change and some just forgot their status because they were so famous and popular.Some perceptive interpreters started to talk against the Japanese Colonial Period or about what they think, Japanese immediately enforced them closely. Were it not for these external pressure, the interpreters of Chosun could improve and occupy very unique position and in film history in Korea.They could have grown up as independent critic in the silence film era when they could do the critics.Expanding these kinds of study will prove that diffusion of the film is not thoughtless acceptance of the new culture but it is event of need of our nation to accept the good culture.

조선의 변사는 우리나라 영화의 특성을 가늠하는 척도 중의 하나이다. 변사는 1900년을 전후하여 우리나라에 영화가 유입된 이래 상당기간 존속하며 영화 발전에 영향을 미쳤던 우리 영화의 구성요소 중 하나이다. 변사는 무성영화의 장면과 장면 사이의 간극을 메워주는 해설자이자 영화전체를 연결하여 이야기를 끌어가는 내레이터였다. 본 연구는 변사의 등장을 구체적 자료를 통해 찾아보고자 한다.변사 연구의 난관은 남아있는 기록이 많지 않다는 데 있다. 변사의 주된 활동 방식은 언술이다. 대본에 의해 이야기를 끌어가는 경우도 있겠지만 대부분 관객의 분위기를 고려하여 즉흥적으로 이야기를 구성했기 때문에 기록물을 찾아내기란 쉽지 않다. 따라서 신문이나 잡지와 같이 문서 형태로 남아있는 자료를 중심으로 변사의 형태를 살펴보아 변사의 연원을 추적하고 그들의 영화사적 의의를 가늠하고자 한다. 본 연구를 통해 일본 변사를 분석하고 더불어 조선 변사를 분석해야하는 필요성을 더욱 느꼈다. 자료의 부족과 한계성을 극복해야 한다는 당위성도 존재한다. 이러한 우리 영화의 관계성에 관한 연구의 확대로 영화의 폭발적인 확산이 단순히 외부로부터 유입된 새로운 문화에 대한 무분별한 몰입이 아니라 좋은 문화를 수용하려는 우리 민족의 심리적 욕구와 맞닿은 사건임을 증명해 나아가야 할 것이다.
