The Apocalypse is usually read as giving information about what will happen in the end times. Alternatively, the Apocalypse is often taken to give hope and comfort to the suffering Christians. On the assumption that these traditional readings foreground just one aspect of Revelation’s message, I have attempted in this article to construe its complex message in terms of spiritual therapy. The major claim of this article is that the Apocalypse restores the holistic spirituality of the reader, which subsumes his or her intellect, emotion, and volition; in so doing, the Apocalypse helps the reader to overcome persecution and suffering, instead of compromising with life situations. Along these lines, I suggest a new definition of Christian spirituality in light of orthodoxy, orthopathos, and orthopraxis, with a view to reconstructing spiritual therapy as embedded within the Apocalypse. In revealing the transcendent reality, including the heavenly throne and the eschatological salvation, the Apocalypse not only gives comfort and hope to readers but also enables them to overcome suffering and bear witness to the Lamb, thereby restoring their spirituality in terms of intellect, emotion, and volition.

요한계시록은 흔히 종말에 일어날 일들에 대한 정보를 제공하거나 고 난을 겪는 그리스도인들에게 소망과 위로를 주는 것으로 이해된다. 논자 는 이러한 전통적 해석들이 요한계시록 메시지의 한 측면만을 부각한다 는 전제하에, 요한계시록의 복합적 메시지를 영성 치료의 관점에서 새롭 게 해석하려고 시도하였다. 이 논문의 핵심 주장은 요한계시록이 독자의 지성과 감성 및 의지적 삶을 아우르는 전인적 영성의 회복을 꾀하며, 이러 한 영성 치료의 기능은 박해와 고난에 직면한 독자들이 현실과 타협하지 않고 고난을 이기도록 돕는 것이라는 것이다. 이를 위해 논자는 바른 신념 (orthodoxy)과 바른 감성(orthopathos) 및 바른 실천(orthopraxis)의 관점 에서 기독교 영성의 정의를 제안한 후에, 이를 토대로 요한계시록에 담긴 영성 메시지를 재구성하였다. 이 해석에 따르면, 요한계시록은 하늘 보좌 와 종말론적 구원을 포함하는 초월적 실제에 대한 지적 계시를 통해 독자 들에게 위로와 소망을 줌과 동시에, 독자들이 고난을 이기고 어린양을 증 언하도록 함으로써 영적 회복을 이루도록 돕는다.
