The term ‘Brutalism’ refers to a post-World War II Modernist architectural style, characterized by its bold yet compelling geometry and material aesthetics of rough, unfinished concrete. Brutalism became particularly prominent during the late 1960s and mid-1970s, and its approach shifted the vocabulary of Modern architecture away from the International Style’s formal dogma. Brutalism’s ideology along with its ethical attitude towards architecture influenced the theoretical development and the emergence of various architectural discourses in this shifting, late Modernism period. However, in spite of these contributions, Brutalism has not been properly evaluated, and the general public’s polarized opinion regarding its aesthetic makes many Brutalist building’s future extremely uncertain. This study intended to examine the viability of adaptive reuse through addition, as an alternative paradigm for addressing this issue. Redefining the essential significant values of Brutalist architecture beyond its stylistic characters, this paper also investigates comprehensive aspects of this particular methodological approach through the case study of recently completed renovation works in the US. As critical and fundamental evaluation criteria, the way of engaging new addition with original design as well as the dialogue they created is comparatively analyzed to identify both advantage and drawback of each case.

브루탈리즘은 전후시기를 대표하는 근대건축 양식으로 대담한 형태어휘와 거칠게 마감된 콘크리트의 미학은 브루탈리즘 건축의 특징이다. 또한 브루탈리즘의 이념과 건축에 대한 입장은 모더니즘 후기에 건축이론의 발전과 다양한 전환기적 담론의 형성에 큰 영향을 주었다. 하지만 오늘날 브루탈리즘 건축에 대한 평가는 극명한 대립의 양상으로 나타나고 있으며, 이에 따라 그 철거와 보존의 문제는 첨예한 사회적 논란의 대상이 되고 있다. 이 연구는 이러한 대립의 상황을 중재하는 대안적 패러다임으로, 증축을 통한 적응적 재생의 가능성을 다루고 있다. 논문에서는 브루탈리즘 건축의 양식적 특징 이면에 존재하는 보다 본질적인 보존 가치들을 재규명하고, 이를 현대적 규범과 요구에 맞춰 보존하기 위한 실천적 방법론으로 증축을 통한 적응적 재생 방식이 적용된 미국의 사례를 분석하여 그 양상과 특징을 포괄적으로 조망하고자 했다. 또한 리노베이션의 건축적 개입을 통해 형성되는 과거와 현재, 기존 건물과 증축 건물이 관계 맺는 양상을 비교함으로써, 이러한 관계 맺음의 개별적 양상에 대한 장단점을 파악할 수 있도록 하였다.
