The main purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of football managers’ personality traits on their success and, if possible, identify specific types of personality traits that have a positive or negative impact on football managers’ success. The collected data was analyzed by the method of statistical analysis using SPSS (ver.18.0), including paired T-test and correlation analysis. For the statistical test of significance, a significance level of 0.05 was adopted. The result of data analysis is as follow. A noticeable difference between successful managers and least successful managers appeared in all five personality traits. All five personality traits of successful football managers showed higher values than that of least successful managers. It proves that the individual personality traits of football mangers would influence their success. In particular, the traits of agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience showed greater differences compared to the other two personality traits, namely neuroticism and extraversion in the test. Moreover, the three personality traits also appeared significant correlation between players and successful football managers in the correlation analysis. This suggests that football managers who possess these three personality traits have a higher possibility to be successful than those who have the other two personality traits in South Korea.

본 연구는 축구감독의 성격적 특성이 감독의 성공에 영향을 미치는지, 만약 미친다면 어떤 성격적 특성이 감독의 성공에 긍정적 혹은 부정적 영향을 미치는지 알아보는 것에 그 목적이 있다. 수집된 자료의 분석은 SPSS(ver18.0)를 활용하여 대응표본 t 검증(Paired t-test), 상관관계분석(Correlation analysis), 그리고 일원배치분산분석(Oneway ANOVA Test)을 실시하였으며 이를 통해 도출된 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 5가지 성격적 특성 모두 성공적인 지 도자가 성공적이지 못한 지도자에 비해 높은 점수를 기록하였으며, 그 중에서도 친화성, 성실성, 경험에 대한 개방성의 성격적 특성에서 더 큰 점수의 차이가 나타났다. 또한, 선수들의 성격적 특성은 성공적인 지도자의 성격적 특성과 유의 미한 관계가 있으며, 그 중에서도 친화성, 성실성, 경험에 대한 개방성의 성격적 특성에서 좀 더 두드러지게 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 감독의 성격적 특성은 그들의 성공에 영향을 미치며, 그 중에서도 친화성, 성실성, 경험에 대한 개방성의 성격적 특성을 가진 지도자들은 신경성, 외향성을 가지고 있는 지도자들에 비해 성공할 가능성이 높다는 것을 의미한다 고 할 수 있다.
