This paper examines the conceptual development of Korean grammar by analyzing early 20th century Korean grammar books from three distinct perspectives. First, I explore the use of various terms that represented the concept of grammar at the time, including munbeop, munjeon, eojeon, eobeop, malbon, etc., and consider the meaning of each. Second, I describe the changes in meaning of munbeop from the rules of composition in traditional Chinese contexts to its use in modern linguistic terminology via outside (foreigners') research on the Korean language. Finally, I analyze modern conceptions of grammar appearing in Korean grammar books published between 1900 and 1930 with respect to the concept of eonmunilchi, the scope of grammar, the influences of modern views of time and space on the concept of grammar, and the recognition of a standard language. By doing so, the present article thoroughly explains the conceptual development of grammar in early 20th century Korea, which began with an urgent need for rules guiding the unification of the spoken and written languages.

본고는 20세기 초에 발행된 국어 문법서들을 검토하여 문법 개념의 발달과정을 세 측면에서 고찰하였다. 첫째, 근대적 문법 개념이 태동하던 시기의 문법 개념 관련 용어들, 즉 ‘문법’, ‘문전’, ‘어법’, ‘어전’, ‘말본’, ‘글틀’ 등의 쓰임을 정리하고 각 용어가 갖는 함의를 살펴보았다. 둘째, 한문 전적에서 ‘한문의 문장 작법’을 나타내던 ‘문법’이 외국인들의 저술에서 ‘grammar’와 대응 관계를 맺으며 근대적 의미로 변용되는 과정을 기술하였다. 셋째, 1900～1930년대 국어 문법서에 나타난 문법에 대한 근대적 인식을 언문일치의 문제, 문법의 범위, 시공간 개념의 변화 및 표준어 의식과 관련하여 논의하였다.
