The rural area development project started with Saemaeul Movement in the 1970's rather increased the gap between urban and rural areas on account of drastic industrialization and urbanization that took place in the 2000's. In 2010, the aging rate of eup and myeon regarded as rural areas reached 20.9%. The aging rate of urban areas was 9.1%, so the aging rate of rural areas was more than twice higher. Therefore, dwelling environment that can support the aged engaged in farming to live more safely, independently, and conveniently is becoming more and more important. Since rural houses are built without any particular architectural or energy-related criteria, most of them hardly secure high insulation performance. Besides, the applied technology or construction technology is not precise, which increases loads for heating and cooling; therefore, it is needed to improve rural houses’ performance for dwelling. Also, there is more and more need for plans to realize eco-friendly dwelling, so the principle of nature-oriented plans related to the direction, insulation, or landscaping of a house is being emphasized. Insulation is being reported as one of the most effective plans to save energy for heating and cooling. As a preliminary research to improve rural houses’ insulation, this study divided areas into three regions, the central region, southern region, and Jeju Island, and conducted field investigation on total 18 houses, six from each town selected from those regions in order to figure out the current status of rural houses and also the characteristics of those buildings. Conclusively, the main living spaces are the living room for central districts and the main room in southern districts and Jeju districts. Southern districts are in plane shapes surrounded by rooms and ventilation is made by all windows. The studied houses mostly had masonry structures and slate rooftops. Additions and improvements are of room expansions and bathroom interior installations. Kitchens are located between rooms in central districts, next to side by side rooms in southern districts, and in Jeju areas, rooms are placed on either side of a living room that is in the form of a corridor.

1970년대 새마을운동을 시점으로 시작된 농촌지역개발사업은 2000년대 이르러 급격한 산업화와 도시화로 인해 도농격차를 더욱 심하게 만들었다. 2010년 농촌인구로 볼 수 있는 읍면지역의 고령화율은 20.9%이다. 도시지역의 고령화율은 9.1%로 농촌지역의 고령화율이 두 배 이상 높다. 농업에 종사하는 고령자들에게 자립성, 안전성, 편리성 등을 지원해 줄 수 있는 주거환경의 중요성이 더욱 증가되고 있다. 최근 농촌주택의 단열에 대한 연구는 리모델링 및 노후화 진단, 공간구조 개선이나 고성능 단열재, 시공법을 이용한 고기밀의 단열성능 향상에 대한 연구가 주를 이루고 있다. 농촌의 환경이나 거주자 특히 단열에 대한 연구는 미흡한 실정어서 농촌주택의 단열 개선을 위한 노력이 필요하다. 따라서 본 연구는 농촌주택의 단열 개선을 위한 사전 조사로서 중부지역, 남부지역, 제주도 3지역으로 구분하고 지역별 선정한 각 마을별 6개 주택인 총 18개의 주택에 대한 현장조사를 진행하여 농촌주택의 현황과 대상건축물의 특징을 파악하고자 한다.
