It is crucial to achieve active peace rather than passive peace, which means a warless state, to realize true humanity in our lives. To build a state of active peace, on both the national or international level, the settlement of a peace culture, inspiring peace ideals, and the development of peace movements are critical. Therefore, the role of civil society is also critical. Religious organizations, which belong to civil society, can play a key role, both independently and as partners of NGOs. This paper aims to analyze the current state of the peace movements of the Unification Church and explore their meanings. There have been various kinds of peace movements of several NGOs established by the Unification Church, which are related to the topics such as the protection of liberalism, reunification of South and North Koreas, voluntary activities, the global community, young people’s peace movement, women’s peace movement, and academic activities. These peace movements of the Unification Church overall bore such characteristics as comprehensiveness of movement territories, international solidarity and local practice, introspecting modernity and religiosity, as well as passion for the reunification of South and North Koreas. I proposed some strategies to further develop the peace movements of the Unification Church: the expansion of opportunities to learn the theories of civil society and NGOs; harmony of diverse religions based on religious pluralism; development of creative methods of peace movements beyond stereotypes.

인간성을 실현하고 인간적인 삶을 보장하기 위해서는 전쟁이 없는 소극적 평화를 넘어 적극적 평화를 구축하는 것이 중요하다. 그런데 이러한 적극적 평화를 구축하기 위해서는 국가적 수준이 든, 국제적 수준이든, 제도의 정비를 넘어 평화문화의 정착, 평화사상의 고취, 평화운동의 전개 등 이 이루어져야 한다. 따라서 시민사회의 역할이 중요하고, 여기서 종교단체는 독자적으로, 그리고 NGO의 파트너로서 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다. 이 글은 통일교회 산하에 결성되어 활동하고 있는 각종 NGO의 평화운동의 현황을 정리하고, 그 운동이 갖는 의의를 탐색하는 것이 목적이다. 통일 교회의 산하에는 자유주의 옹호, 남북통일, 자원활동, 인류한가족, 청년 및 청소년 평화운동, 여성 평화운동, 학술활동 등 다양한 형태의 평화운동이 전개되고 있었다. 이러한 평화운동은 전반적으 로 운동영역의 포괄성, 국제적 연대와 지방적 실천, 근대성의 성찰과 종교성 근원에의 기초, 남북 평화통일에 대한 열정 등과 같은 특징을 지니고 있었다. 앞으로 통일교회 산하 평화운동의 발전을 위해 시민사회 및 NGO 이론에 대한 학습기회의 확대, 종교적 다원성에 기초한 초종교적 화합, 창 의적인 운동방법의 개발 등과 같은 제안을 하였다.
