‘Yoku’is a polysemous adverb which has multiple meanings for evaluation, manner, degree and frequency. However, considering the basic meaning of the ‘yoku’ is “evaluation” which is derived from its original adjective form ‘ii’, the meaning of the evaluation recognized by‘yoku’in the usage for the evaluation is a “positive” evaluation on the whole proposition which has been realized on the basis of speaker’s expectation. It denotes speaker’s judgment on the predicate representing the changes of state, continued state and habitually continued situation respectively among the meanings as the manner, the degree and the frequency. And the meaning can be understood differently according to the criteria of predicate. In summary, the scope can vary depending upon the location of the ‘yoku’, and the criteria due to the changes in scope can make a difference in meaning. After all, so it can be translated as a polysemous word when the lexical meaning is used as grammatically.
