The aim of this case research is to describe the convergence education of Akita International University. Today, competition among universities in Korea are becoming more and more intensified, its strength is expected to continue to rise. In this situation, the Akita International University provides meaningful implications for universities in Korea. Universities in Japan are at similar situation in Korea. The unique values of Akita that we identified are twofold: The first is internationalization in education. The purpose of the internationalization is for Japanese students. For exchange students, AIU provides japan studies program and japan language program. To do this, AIU forms an international community to mingle Japanese students with foreign exchange students by living and learning together. Second thing is about international liberal arts education. The focus of international liberal arts education is that students acquire comprehensive range of skills and knowledge to build the intellectual foundation for specialist study by providing a broad range of academic disciplines. In doing so, students promotes learner autonomy. Unlike specialized education, in which students acquire an in-depth knowledge of a particular field, providing international liberal arts education is to find a field in which students want to study further. The implications and conclusions are discussed.

본 연구의 목적은 일본의 국제교양대학의 융합교육에 대해 살펴보는 것이다. 오늘날 한국의 대학의 경쟁은 점점 더 심화되고 있으며, 그 강도는 지속적으로 높아질 것으로 판단된다. 이러한 상황적 요인을 고려할 때 우리와 닮은꼴인 일본의 대학의 상황에서 성공적으로 대학을 운영하고 있는 국제교양대학의 사례는 우리 대학에 의미 있는 함의를 제공해 줄 것으로 판단된다. 국제교양대학의 특징은 두 가지로 정리해 볼 수 있다. 첫째, 국제화 교육이다. 아키타의 국제화교육의 핵심은 재학생을 위한 국제화이다. 하지만 자국 학생을 위해 외국인을 위한 프로그램의 개발 및 제공에도 적극적이라는 점이 차이점이다. 둘째, 교양교육이다. 교양 교육의 특징은 다양성이다. 전공 교육은 해당 분야에 대한 깊이 있는 학습을 한다. 반면에 교양교육은 다양한 분야에 대한 기초 학습을 한다. 이러한 교육을 제공하는 이유는 다양성 속에서 자신의 방향을 찾도록 하기 위함이다. 자신의 미래를 입학 당시 전공으로 정해버리는 것이 아니라 4년 동안 스스로 다양한 과목을 수강하면서 찾아나가도록 유도하는 것이다. 정리하면, 국제화 교육과 스스로 학습을 유도하는 환경을 제공하는 것이 이들 교육의 성공요인이라고 볼 수 있다.
