As one of representative Korean media contents, webtoons begin to enlarge their markets into global markets. However, there are some doubts their successes because of cultural differences. The current study analyzed the cultural differences between Korean and U.S. webtoons. Based on the frames suggested by cultural psychologists Nisbett, Hall, and Hofstede, the study explored the cultural differences in terms of holistics (analytic) perception, individualism(collectivism), Power distance, Masculinity, Uncertainty avoidance, Long-terms orientation, and high context (low context) society. As results, the study found that holistic perception instead of analytic descriptions were more frequently found in Korean webtoon rather than American webcomics, and vice versa. At the same times, collectivist characters such as family values or group identities were more frequently appeared in Korean webtoons than American webcomics. There were also cultural differences between ‘Mishang’ and ‘Batman.’ There are uncertainty-avoidance, long-terms orientation, and high-contexts. However, no differences were found in terms of Power Distance and Masculinity. Because cultural differences were expressed in webtoons, the Korean webtoons need to consider different cultural characteristics in order to globalized market.

한국의 대표적인 문화콘텐츠로 자리 잡은 웹툰은 국내 시장에서의 성공을 바탕으로 글로벌 시장으로 진출을 도모하고 있다. 한국적 문화가치를 담고 있는 웹툰이 문화적 토양이 다른 미국 등 서양에서도 성공할 수 있을지 주목된다. 본 연구는 동서양의 문화적 차이를 규명한 니스벳(Nisbett)과 홀(Hall), 호프스테더(Hofstede)의 문화심리학 이론을 적용, 한국과 미국의 웹툰과 웹코믹스를 분석했다. 한국의 <미생>과 미국의 <배트맨>의 634개의 컷을 내용 분석한 결과, <미생>에서는 종합적 사고를 하는 동양인의 특성, <배트맨>에는 분석적 사고를 하는 서양인의 특성이 그대로 반영된 것을 확인했다. 또 <미생>에는 가족이나 집단, 애국심 등과 같은 집단주의 표현이 많았으며 <배트맨>에는 개인의 리더십과 영웅주의 등 개인주의 특색이 그대로 표출됐다. 한국의 웹툰과 미국의 웹코믹스에는 불확실성의 회피, 장기지향성, 고맥락 등에서도 큰 차이를 보였다. 한국인의 문화적 특성이 담긴 웹툰의 글로벌화를 위해서는 미국 등 서구인들의 문화적 특성을 반영하는 전략을 구사할 필요성이 제기된다.
