The role of teachers in practicing character education has been important, as character education has been emphasized socially and politically. However, there is little research on character education for preservice teachers. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the research papers published about character education for preservice teacher education in South Korea and to find the problems that need to be solved to improve character education in preservice teacher education. The research results show three important trends. First, the studies’ purposes were categorized according to four themes: development of a teacher dispositions assessment instrument, analysis of relationships/effects, exploration of perceptions/awareness, and development of educational programs. Second, the key words that point to “character” were categorized in three groups: teacher dispositions, creative personality or creativity and character, and character without any modifier, which has the general meaning of “character.” Third, the number of published research papers is highest in the early-childhood teacher education area, among three different levels of teacher education areas. Given the research results, some recommendations are possible. It is needed to develop and apply practical programs aiming character education for preservice teachers. The relationship between teacher disposition and creativity is also needed to be clarified. Last but not least, more diverse research topics are possible in elementary and secondary teacher education area.

최근 인성교육의 중요성이 날로 증가하면서 인성교육을 직접 수행하는 교사의 역할 또한 중요해지고 있다. 그러나 예비교사를 대상으로 한 인성교육은 아직 만족스러운 수준이 아니며, 앞으로 연구되어야 할 과제들이 많다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 현재까지 예비교사를 대상으로 한 인성교육 관련 연구들의 동향을 정리하여, 추후 연구되어야 할 과제들을 제시하는 데에 연구의 목적이 있다. 연구 문제의 해결을 위해 문헌연구와 기술적 통계분석을 사용하여 국내 예비교사 인성교육 관련 연구들을 분석하였다. 연구 목적별로 분류하였을 때, 교직 적·인성검사 도구 개발, 인성과 다른 요소들과의 관계 및 효과 탐색, 인성 및 인성교육에 대한 인식 분석, 인성교육 프로그램 개발 등으로 분류되었다. 연구에 나타난 ‘인성’ 용어별로 정리하였을 때, ‘교직인성’, ‘창의·인성’, 그리고 일반적인 ‘인성’으로 분류되었다. 연구 대상별로는 예비유아교사를 주제로 한 연구가 가장 많았으며, 예비초등교사와 예비중등교사 대상 연구는 상대적으로 많이 이루어지지 않았다. 인성교육에 대한 개념, 관련 요소들 간의 관계, 인성교육에 대한 인식 등에 대한 연구들이 그 동안 활발히 이루어진 만큼, 이제는 보다 실천적인 교육프로그램의 개발과 적용에 대한 연구의 활성화가 기대된다. 다음으로 ‘교직인성’, ‘창의·인성’, ‘인성’ 등으로 나뉘어있는 인성에 대한 개념을 포괄적으로 정리할 필요가 있으며, 초등 및 중등 교사교육 분야에서 예비교사 인성교육에 대해 보다 관심을 갖고 연구주제의 다양화를 위해 노력하여야겠다.
