The purpose of this study is to find out how Christian education approach or model for the elderly in Korea can be emphasized by understanding the elderly’s life story and faith story. This research can be differentiated from others in terms that it is an empirical one. Research findings on Christian education for the elderly in Korea have been deductive in that general principles from other disciplines such as education, psychology, theology, sociology, and gerontology has been applied to Christian education setting without substantial verification and evaluation. However, this research is an attempt to show how applications and premises on Christian education for elderly in Korea can be drawn from and enacted through old people’s life story and faith story. Also, this research using qualitative methodology can be listed as one of the few studies in the field of Christian Education for the elderly in Korea. Six interviewers participated in this study. Interviews were done individually and in group. Each person was interviewed two times individually for one and half to two hours for each session. Group interviews were conducted twice: one for a preliminary meeting and one for a follow-up. Also the findings were reported back to each interviewee. In-depth interviews were done with each participant two times. First interview was designed to know about their life story. For this interview, ten questions that were developed by McAdams (1988) were asked. Second interview was about their faith story. For this interview, seven questions prepared by the author were used. Interview data and participant observation memos were analyzed in three stages. The first step was to find appropriate words or phrases representing their life and faith stories. By reading each interviewee’s entire transcripts, words or phrases that were repeatedly used were selected to represent the meanings of their life and faith stories. Second stage was to find appropriate themes for those words or phrases. And, the third stage was to categorize or tie themes into grand themes. Three themes can be drawn from the elderly’s life story such as family as a backbone for life, breakthrough, and happy childhood. Four themes were drawn from the participants’ faith story such as God’s grace, prayer partner, hope, and servanthood. After some discussions on the research findings, the faith community approach and interpretation approach for Christian education for the elderly in Korea are suggested. The limitations of this study are also listed.

이 연구의 목적은 한국 노인을 위해서 어떠한 기독교교육적 접근과 모형이 노인의 인생 이야기와 신앙 이야기를 이해함으로써 강조될 수 있는가를 살펴보았다. 이 연구는 기존 노인 기독교교육의 연구와는 다르게 실용적 접근을 한 연구이다. 이제까지 한국의 노인 기독교교육 연구는 교육학, 심리학, 신학, 사회학, 노년학과 같은 학문으로부터 이끌어진 일반적 원리들이 충분한 확인과 평가 없이 기독교교육에 적용되어왔다는 점에서 연역적이라 할 수 있다. 반면에 이 연구는 노인을 위한 기독교교육에 관한 적용과 전제가 어떻게 노인 자신들의 인생 이야기와 신앙 이야기를 통해서 나오고 실행될 수 있는가를 보여주는 시도이다. 또한 이 연구는 노인 기독교교육에서는 거의 사용된 적인 없는 질적 연구 방법을 쓰고 있다. 이 연구에는 여섯 명의 노인이 참여하였다. 면담은 개인적으로 그리고 집단적으로 두 번에 걸쳐서 이루어졌다. 각 개인 면담은 한 번에 한 시간 반에서 두 시간에 사이에 두 차례 이루어졌다. 집단 면담도 두 번 이루어졌는데 한 번은 준비 모임, 또 한 번은 후속 모임이었다. 연구 결과는 또한 각 개인에게 보고되었다. 심층면담은 각 개인에게두 번씩 이루어졌으며, 첫 번째는 노인의 인생 이야기를 알기 위한 것으로, McAdams가 개발한 열 개 질문을 하였다. 두 번째는 노인의 신앙 이야기에 관한 것으로 본 연구자가 준비한 일곱 개 질문이 주어졌다. 면담 자료와 참여 관찰 메모는 세 단계에 걸쳐 분석되었다. 첫 번째 단계는 노인들의 인생 이야기와 신앙 이야기를 대표할 수 있는 적절한 단어나 구절을 찾는 것이었다. 개인의 전체 면담 내용을 읽음으로써 노인들의 인생 이야기와 신앙 이야기를 대표할 수 있는 반복적으로 쓰인 단어나 구절이 선택되었다. 두 번째 단계는 이렇게 선택된 단어나 구절에 대한 적절한 주제를 발견하는 단계였다. 세 번째 단계는 이런 주제를 대주제로 묶는 것이었다. 노인의 인생 이야기로부터 인생의 근간인 가족, 탈출구, 행복한 어린 시절과 같은 세 가지 대주제가 나왔다. 연구 참여자의 신앙 이야기로부터는 하나님의 은혜, 기도 동역자, 희망, 봉사라는 네 가지 대주제가 연구 결과로 나타났다. 연구 결과에 대한 논의가 이루어진 후에, 한국 노인을 위한 기독교교육 모형으로 신앙 공동체 접근과 해석학 접근을 제시하였다. 또한 이 연구의 제한점이 제시되었다.
