This research explores the possibility of incorporating reading of the saints’ lives into the curriculum of the church. The records of the saints’ lives and miracles, known as hagiography, contained various educational motives at the time of their writing. The typical intended audience for hagiography was the lay person, specifically female readers and children, and was generally written in the vernacular so as to contribute to the lay person’s spiritual and devotional formation. At church, children, youth, and adults frequently studied biblical figures, but rarely heard about the saints’ lives and their in the Protestant Church. The Protestant Church has been reluctant to suggest the saints’ lives and miracles as part of Christian literature to their congregation because they regard these books as part of the Catholic tradition. During the Medieval Ages, the saints’ lives and miracles represented specific devotional postures or ethical practices as a foundation for the Christian lifestyle. Although hagiography justified the saints’ relic, the hagiographical text is meant to edify the reader, teach doctrine, inspire veneration of the saint, and exemplify Christian devoutness. In a modern context, using these books as Christian literature should be done with caution because they contain significant elements of Catholic teaching from the medieval period. If the church leadership carefully guides the congregation in reading and interpreting the books, the reader may acquire a sense of historical sensitivity, Christian traditions, and Christian life. This research is to provide a representative sample instead of an exhaustive one. The saints primarily covered in this paper are the child saint St. Foy and St. Mary Magdalene from eleventh and fourteenth century respectively, in order to demonstrate the social differences of these two time periods in the same area. Through analyzing these two case studies, this paper explores how these social and historical elements affect education.
