This paper is to review the meaning of public sphere with regard to contemporary situation. It has fundamentally changed the public sphere and raised the critical challenge in urbanism and architectural thinking. Traditionally public space in the city was regarded as an important public sphere. It has a symbolic meaning for freedom and democracy. As a center and place in the city, public space visualized public sphere and a site for both communication and action. With the rise of Modernity public sphere has changed a lot. Other media played a important role as a new public sphere and physical public space faced the difficult situation. After Modern situation information technology has asked reorientation of public sphere. The transformation and decline of public sphere asked how architecture response to the new challenge for making a public space in the metropolitan area. Two kind of view point can be possible. First one is to agree and follow the trends of decline of public domain. Architect can give a new kind of public space with a new situation. In the other hand, as public sphere became more like a sign or image, concrete physical public space can be more important. Physical public space can be complement to non-place including the cyber space.

본 연구는 근대 이후, 즉 현대 도시에서 공공 영역의 변화에 초점을 맞춰 그 의미에 대해 다시 고찰해보려는 것이다. 여기서 ‘다시’라는 어휘는 기존의 관점과 다른 해석적 입장을 뜻한다. 그러기 위해 공공 영역에 대해 숙고한 사상가인 한나 아렌트와 위르겐 하버마스에 기대어 도시의 공공 공간의 의미와 그 사회 정치적 함의를 규명해보고자 한다. 우선 공공 영역과 공공 공간에 대해 개괄하고 근대성과 공적 영역과의 관계에 대해 논했다. 다음으로 근대 이후의 공적 영역의 변질과 위기, 그리고 쇠퇴에 대해 현상적 분석과 그 원인, 그리고 함의하는 바를 살폈다. 동시대에 가속되는 공공 영역과 공공 공간의 변용과 쇠락은 우리의 시민적 삶과 도시 생활, 나아가 문화 전반에 퇴행적이라는 전제에서 논지를 전개했다. 그리고 이런 우호적이지 않은 상황이 제기하는 문제와 허용된 가능성은 무엇인가 검토해 보고자 했다.
