The purpose of this article is to understand the women’s role through the letters and pictures of Chunjeonli(川前里) in Ulsan(蔚山). And how about the type of these rituals, and what is the social meaning of these rituals. As a result the women who were revealed to the letters and pictures were attended the ritual. And as a priestess, they heading up the rituals. These priestess were carried out the popularization of Buddhist with all social position and regardless of the gender. Also they carried out the perpetuating of Buddhist in Silla dynasty. This faith of Buddhism connected with defense of the fatherland religion. This sprit were centripetal force of unified three nations in Silla dynasty. It started at Chunjeonli in Ulsan. Ulsan seoseokgok(書石谷) is the place where the priestess were carried out the popularization of Buddhist and the perpetuating at 6th centuries.

본 논문은 울산 천전리 서석곡의 명문과 세선화에 보이는 여성을 통하여 그들의 역할이 무엇 이었는지, 그리고 제의형태는 어떠하였는지, 또 그것이 당시 사회에서 가지는 의미가 무엇이었 는지에 대하여 살펴본 것이다. 그 결과, 울산 천전리 서석곡의 명문과 세선화에 보이는 여성들 은 제의에 참여하며 제의를 주재함으로서 신라 왕실의 초기 불교정책에서 대중화와 토착화를 주 도한 여사제들이었음을 알 수 있었다. 제의가 거행된 시기는 새로운 왕의 즉위와 관련되어 있었 으며 불교정책이 추진되는 과정과 밀접하게 관련되어 있었다. 천전리 서석곡은 법흥왕으로부터 唐軍을 축출하며 삼국통일을 이루는 신라의 변혁과 도약의 시기에 여제사장이 주재한 제의 속에서 신라 불교의 대중화와 토착화가 이루어지는 과정을 보 여줌으로서 울산 천전리는 고대로부터 이어온 전통종교의 맥을 계승하면서 한국 불교의 대중화 와 토착화를 이룬 곳이라는 의미를 지니고 있다.
